I tried the same thing on my wife's computer which does not have local 
mail.  She is still running 10.6.  I did not get any error messages so 
the obvious assumption is the test message went out.  However, it was 
never delivered, so I have to think it never really went out or if it 
did there was something wrong with it.  That probably makes this a 
dead-end idea unless somebody knows how to make it work properly
