But I use it across three computers - two desktops and a laptop. The desktops are in entirely separate locations (my home office and my regular office). All three computers back up to repositories on local drives connected to each of the two desktops. So just from Crashplan, there are two copies of everything from each of my three computers and those two copies are in separate locations. And that's all using only the *free* Crashplan set up because I am not sending anything to Crashplan's servers, only to my own computers. (And if you don't have a second location, CP lets you send a back up to any friend who authorizes you to do so - and the friend cannot read or access your data in any way, since the encryption all lives at your end). > regardless it still uses and requires setup of an account. CrashPlan is only one of many :-) You have to register with them, and their servers need to intervene at least to the level of each computer connects to them so that they know where the computers are in order to then connect the computers to each other to send data. But none of my data lives on their servers. One downside is that since I don't have a copy on their servers, I can't use things like their iOS app to look at my content remotely - that only works talking to their machines. For me, not important at all. I have additional backup measures in place, but Crashplan makes it by far the easiest to keep the offsite copy. Time Machine is great for a local copy (and I use it in addition to CrashPlan). I have Time Machine copy the entire machine and were I to try to restore from a backup, that would be my first go-to copy. I have Crashplan only copying data, not all my apps, system files, etc.
