I should clarify my early message.  FireFox and Thunderbird updates 
don't work for me, possibly because of this issue.  So I download their 
DMG, and if I try to drag the app to where I want it, I get the message
Howard complained about.  Unless I first delete the old version.

Doesn't happen with Opera or other items delivered via DMG.
