I did something dumb (yet, again).  I forgot to connect the drive where 
I store my iTunes library before updating my podcasts.  Four got 
downloaded.  Of course the ones that were already there couldn't be 
found.  Crap, I said, or something to that effect, and deleted the 
podcasts I had just downloaded.  Then I exited iTunes, connected the 
drive and fired up iTunes.

Refresh wouldn't re-download the podcasts, so I went to the source and 
downloaded them, initially into the download directory but later I moved 
them to the correct podcast directory.  However, I can't figure out how 
to make iTunes realize they are there!

There are very clear instructions on how to remove something from 
iTunes, but the docs are silent on how to restore podcasts.  I tried Add 
to Library, which works for actual tunes, and it actually did load them 
somewhere.  Unfortunately, I don't know where iTunes put them (do you?) 
but they certainly didn't get into the podcast directory or any of the 
music directories.

After running Add to Library while the podcasts were still in the 
Downloads directory I ran find on the entire library, but I couldn't 
find them anywhere.  So I don't have any idea where iTunes put them.
