Drat. I only have a few minutes and I'm shocked how unintuitive this is.

What's the easiest way to copy text that is on my iPad to Windows when the
iPad is on the Wi-Fi network, and the iPad is tethered to the PC by USB?

Since the iPad is inches from the PC, any path longer than that is absurd.

I have the text copied to the Apple clipboard, so I just want to paste it
into a file that I can copy to the PC over the USB or Wi-Fi connection.

I tried pasting it into a "note" but I've never used Notes. When I opened
Notes for the first time, Notes asked me to "join the cloud (which, of
course, I said no to), but even though Notes is open, Notes won't let me
create a note by pasting the iPad clipboard into it. Why not?

The Notes square-with-a-pencil icon is grayed out no matter what I try.

If Notes won't work, what other SIMPLE way is there to transfer a long text
to the Windows PC which is only six inches away (so using the Internet
would be absurd).

I don't have a lot of time to solve this Apple problem so these
observations are being typed hurriedly, as I go through the process.

Apparently without a local "On My iPad" account toggled on, Notes is too
stupid to know where to save notes, which grays out the new-note icon.

Well, maybe that's not what the problem is, 'cuz the settings are correct:
Settings > Apps > Notes > Default Account > On my iPad

Giving up on the brain-dead Notes app (unless someone knows what's wrong).

Apparently Apple has a Universal Clipboard (which lets you copy on an iPad
and paste straight onto a nearby PC or Mac), but it requires being signed
into the same Apple Account on both devices and having Bluetooth/Wi-Fi
handoff turned on, which is so absurd that I can't imagine using it.

If the text travels more than six inches, it's absurd in terms of privacy,
but I'm sure the iPad isn't so brain dead that we can't get a clipboard six
inches without having to sacrifice all our privacy to do it.

I'm looking up how to do something this fantastically simple, with privacy.

This method worked, but it's absurd that it requires the Internet to work.

1. I went to SnapDrop.net on a Windows PC web browser with VPN extensions.
The SnapDrop.net GUI says Upload files, or upload folder.
2. I went to SnapDrop.net on the iPad Safari web browser.
On iOS Safari, I pressed the "opt out" of data collection prompt.
It says Upload files, or upload folder.

There's no obvious way to paste the iOS clipboard.
Let's try something else, but this is just ridiculous.

Why can't I just copy to the clipboard on the iPad and paste it to Windows
over the USB cable or the local Wi-Fi without going to the Internet?

Looking it up, I'm trying this now to paste the iOS clipboard to Windows.

0. Copy long text into the iPad clipboard by longpressing & selecting copy
1. Open the Files app on the iPad
2. Tap "On My iPad" in a list on the left side of the screen
3. Tap the folder icon with a plus sign at the top right
4. Name the new folder anything, I used "clpbrd"
5. Tap the newly created folder ("clpbrd") to open it
6. It said "Folder is Empty"
7. Open the Settings app on the iPad.
8. Settings > Apps > Notes > Default Account > On my iPad > checkmark
9. Open Notes and on the bottom right is a pencil-in-a-box icon
10. Press that pencil:box icon and long press to paste the clipboard
11. Do that a few times to capture the entire desired long text message set
12. Tap the box with an upgoing arrow at the top right of the screen
13. Tap view more
14. Tap Save to Files
15. Tap the clpbrd folder to open it
16. Tap Save in the top right corner
17. Open the Files app and navigate to On My iPad > clpbrd
18. Verify the saved text file is safely saved
19. Plug the USB cable from the iPad into the Windows PC
20. Open Windows File Explorer and select the "Apple iPad" device
21. Select "Internal Storage"
22. You'll see an absolutely absurd set of crazily-named folders
    201908_a, 202408_a, 202409_a... 202610_a
23. Open the last idiotically named folder in that listing
    This PC\Apple iPad\Internal Storage\202610_a\
24. Wait for a billion media files to paint
25. Realize Apple's MTP setup hides the local Files app directory layout

What a brain-dead implementation.

OK. Well, at least we have a text file on the iPad.
So we just gotta get that file onto the PC over USB or Wi-Fi.

I'll keep looking this up...

25. Wait for a billion media files to paint
26. Realize Apple's MTP setup hides the local Files app directory layout
27. Open the Files app on the iPad and navigate back into the clpbrd folder
28. Tap and hold the saved text file, tap Share
29. It would be too easy to have a "Share to Photos" option
Options are Firefox, KeePassium, Numbers, more
Below that are copy, add tags and open in firefox
Below "more" is just a list of apps on the iPad

Apple's implementation of MTP over USB is intentionally crippled.

It is hardcoded to only expose the camera roll (the DCIM folders like
202610_a). Apple completely locks down the "Files" app (On My iPad)
so that Windows File Explorer cannot see it, browse it, or search it.

No amount of command prompts, search strings, or folder refreshing will
make Windows see a file saved in a generic local folder on the iPad.

So we have to get that clipbrd text file into the Photos folder somehow.
But how?

Apple's implementation of MTP over USB is intentionally crippled.
It is hardcoded to only expose the camera roll (i.e., the absurdly
named DCIM folders like 202610_a).

Apple completely locks down the "Files" app (On My iPad) so that
Windows File Explorer cannot see it, browse it, or search it.

No amount of command prompts, search strings, or folder refreshing
will make Windows see a file saved in a generic local folder there.

30. Start LocalSend on Windows
31. Start LocalSend on iOS
32. Press Send on the iOS LocalSend
33. You'll see a Selection button for Media, Text, Paste, File, Folder
34. Tap File inside LocalSend to open the iPad file picker
35. Navigate to On My iPad > clpbrd, select the saved text file
36. Tap the blue Open button in the top right corner
37. Select the target Windows PC device tile inside LocalSend
38. Click Accept on the Windows LocalSend notification
39. You get only about five seconds, so it takes a few tries
40. On the PC LocalSend you'll see
    Open File
Do you want to open the received file
    Open, Show in folder, Close(5,4,3,2,1)
41. Clicking "Show in Folder" puts 'text.txt' in the
Windows LocalSend folder, or clicking "Show in Folder" puts
    'text.txt' in a Windows default-editor file named 'text.txt'.

Whew!
It just worked.

That's what I love about Apple's brilliant marketing of "It just works".
What should take two steps (copy & paste), takes ten times as many steps.

Gotta love iOS interoperability.
1. Copy long text into the iPad clipboard by longpressing & selecting copy
2. Make sure you're using a local account only (you never want the cloud)
   iOS:Settings > Apps > Notes > Default Account > On my iPad > checkmark
3. Open iOS Notes and on the bottom right is a pencil-in-a-box icon
4. Press that pencil:box icon and long press to paste the long text
5. If necessary, do that a few times to clipboard paste all desired text
6. Tap the share icon at the top right of the screen
7. Tap view more
8. Tap Save to Files
9. Tap the folder+ icon at the top right
10. Name the new folder whatever you want, e.g., "clpbrd"
11. Tap the clpbrd folder to open it
12. Tap Save in the top right corner to save to 'text.txt' by default
13. Start LocalSend on Windows
14. Start LocalSend on iOS
15. Press Send on the iOS LocalSend
16. Tap File inside LocalSend to open the iPad file picker
17. Navigate to On My iPad > clpbrd, select the saved text file
18. Tap the blue Open button in the top right corner
19. Select the target Windows PC device tile inside LocalSend
20. Click Accept on the Windows LocalSend notification
21. On the PC LocalSend click Show in folder or click Open
Do this before the 5-second countdown timer expires

Note that on my Android, over USB or Wi-Fi, here are the steps:

1. Rightclick copy in the Android window
2. Rightclick paste into a Windows text editor

To send it back from Windows to the iPad, there were complications.

1. Save the edited text file on the Windows PC.
2. Open LocalSend on both the Windows PC and the iPad.
3. In LocalSend on Windows, click Send > File (or drag and drop the file directly into the LocalSend window).
4. Select the file from your PC storage.
5. Select the target iPad device tile from the list of available devices.
6. Accept the incoming file prompt on the iPad (or let Quick Save handle it if enabled).
7. Open the Files app on the iPad and check the LocalSend folder (or wherever your iOS downloads are configured to land) to access the updated file.

Error:
[RhttpConnectionException] Connection error. URL: http://192.168.1.22:53317/api/localsend/v2/prepare-upload (hyper_util::client::legacy::Error(Connect, ConnectError("tcp connect error", Os { code: 10061, kind: ConnectionRefused, message: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it." })))

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="LocalSend" dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=53317
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="LocalSend UDP" dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=53317

Then it was able to be sent from Windows to the iPad.

On a normal operating system newsgroup, when I propose one way of doing
something (which eventually worked, by the way), purposefully helpful
people on that newsgroup would possibly suggest a better way of doing the
task (that fit the requirements, of course, of not needing the Internet to
move a file six inches from an iPad to the PC, without using the "cloud").

Oh look. DipshIT is AGAIN jumping thru hoops to do something VERY simple.

Use the fucking Files app on iOS you dumbass. Open the files app. Long
press anywhere, select Paste. A new text file will be created with your
pasted text from the clipboard. AGAIN using the files app, connect to
your Windows computer over the Wi-Fi connection. You DO have a drive
shared on your Windows computer, right? AGAIN using the Files app,
copy/paste your text file to Windows.

Done. God DAMN, you are stupid.

How long DOES it take you to dream up these absurdly complicated ways to do
easy things? All in your never ending, life-long goal of “Making Apple
Look Bad”.

Hi Nick Charles,

THANK YOU for that wonderful idea, as the record shows I initially tried
Files but I hadn't realized that longpressing in empty space creates the
text.txt file containing whatever was copied into the iOS clipboard.

Given I have never, in all the decades of posting to Usenet, ever disagreed
with any logically defensible statement, I do very much agree with you.

Using Files works much better than using Notes did in my previous tests.

To confirm that you're correct, I did test this and it does work for most:
   1. Long-paste in Files app to create text2.txt (this works)
   2. Open Files app > connect to Windows PC via SMB
   3. Copy the file to the Windows machine

Here is where it breaks down, for me, which I had stated in this thread.

My Win10 local security policy LimitBlankPasswordUse is enabled, which
restricts network logons using blank-password accounts, which makes sense.

My existing AndroidBackup share grants Everyone read access only, not write
access, but that can be changed. The problem is the password requirement.

So the Files-app paste suggestion works, as I verified. But the subsequent
SMB transfer is not a ready-to-use bidirectional solution due to the
default password requirement. Weakening that opens up too many holes.

LocalSend avoids that SMB password dependency on the user or guest account.

   1. SMB authentication with a passwordless Windows account does not work
even when guest is allowed. Even with password-protected sharing
turned OFF on the Windows side, AFAIK, the Files app's SMB client
requires a username and password when adding a server.

   2. No Apple software on the PC means no iCloud Drive, no Apple
Devices app, and no USB file-browsing path from PC to iPad.
The Files app on iOS cannot reach the PC via iCloud because
there is no iCloud on the Windows machine. The only default
network path from iPad Files to Windows is SMB, and as noted
above, SMBv2 auth without a Windows password won't work.

   3. We explicitly do not want any Internet involvement. Hence
cloud-based workarounds (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox)
are off the table. That eliminates the onlypath where iOS
      and Windows interoperate without friction.

So your suggestion is appreciated as it eliminates need for Notes!
But something like the LocalSend method is required, unfortunately.
 a. No accounts, no passwords, no cloud services
 b. Transfers over Wi-Fi LAN only (nothing touches the Internet)
 c. Works iPad <-> Windows with a simple tap-to-send flow
 d. No SMBv2 configuration issues, no authentication dialogs,
and no dependency on Windows sharing settings

Never have I disagreed with any person who proposes logically defensible
solutions, so I do agree with you that the Files-app paste step is a real
improvement over the Notes workflow that I was able to get work yesterday.

But, unfortunately, the SMB step is still a friction point that makes
the Files + SMB path fail for a passwordless Windows machine with no Apple
software installed, and I'm not adding a password just to transfer files.

Luckily, LocalSend works on all platforms, stays local, and doesn't require
a password just to transfer a file from one machine on the LAN to another.
Although, I admit openly, sometimes it's flaky (due to firewall issues).

That is not "complicated" since it's simply the easiest way to do it.

Note: Since LocalSend uses a fixed, hardcoded default port (TCP and UDP
port 53317) across all platforms (Windows, iOS, Android, macOS, Linux), if
the Windows-to-iPad transfer fails with a connection error, we may need to
add firewall rules on the Windows PC to open it up for file transfer.

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="LocalSend TCP"
      dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=53317
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="LocalSend UDP"
      dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=53317

After that, the transfer should work bidirectionally over the Wi-Fi LAN
without any need for OEM accounts or the Internet or, gasp, the cloud.

In summary, thank you for your suggestion, which was helpful as I tried the
Files app but didn't realize the Files app can create a text file directly
from the clipboard, eliminating the need for Notes. I tested it, and I
openly, publicly, and sincerely acknowledge that improvement works on iOS.

Where we differ is the next step. SMBv2/v3 can support Guest access, but
making that work without credentials may require Windows security and
share-permission changes that I am not willing to make just to transfer a
text file. My existing share is read-only for Everyone, and my Windows
policy restricts network logons using blank-password accounts. I am not
claiming SMB without a password is universally impossible but I am saying
it is not a ready-to-use solution under my current setup constraints.

Luckily, LocalSend gives all platforms bidirectional file transfer over the
existing LAN without an SMB share, Windows file-sharing credentials, cloud
accounts, or an Internet transfer. While LocalSend can occasionally need
firewall troubleshooting, that is a manageable one-time setup trade-off.

So, thank you for the iOS Files-app shortcut, which improves the
file-creation step on iOS from the clipboard. One reason I was frustrated
is because on Android, the clipboard is shared between Windows and iOS so I
simply rightclick to copy on Android and rightclick to paste onto Windows
and vice versa. So the fact on Android the clipboard is shared was partly
why the iOS method seems like such a kludge.

If, on iOS, we could put a file into the iOS DCIM directory, that would
have worked to transfer files, at least for one direction, with Windows.
As we all know, on Android, Windows & the Android filesystem work
bidirectionally, but we're severely restricted when dealing with iOS.

Overall, while the Files+SMB method should work for most Windows:iOS users,
LocalSend remains my preferred transfer method because it meets my actual
requirements without changing my Windows security configuration.

Thank you very much for your helpful suggestions about iOS Files creating a
a text.txt file containing the clipboard contents when longpressing in
empty space (I was looking for a way to paste the clipboard INTO a file).

Isn't your suggestion also "absurdly complicated"? Nearly everybody has
installed WhatsApp (on the phone/tablet and PC), so why not use it to
send the text to yourself?

Wouldn't there be some way to do that over Bluetooth ?
A small text file shouldn't be too taxing at 75KB/sec.
Usually computers have a Bluetooth Send and a Bluetooth Receive,
and the latter one must be set up first.

There are many ways to transfer files between a smartphone and
a PC. I use an FTP server on the smartphone and the standard
Windows Explorer to drag&drop files between smartphone and PC.

But if you only want to transfer a short text snippet between
the smartphone and PC then it is to much overhead to store it in
a file and transfer the file. It is much simpler to use an
messenger like WhatsApp (even simpler than an email). And
you can also use WhatsApp to transfer a single picture or
a small data file.

That's so simple even grandma can do it!

Seriously though, Mac users are telling us that such things have been
simplified to a point that even total dummies can do it, and here you
have Windows and Linux users telling us that the simplicity is
meaningless because the way one would do it in the 1990s is sufficient.
Why are some users so resistant to technological progress of any kind?
