#1613 — Samsung NC110 netbook: Any Linux users?!

Anyone here replaced Windows with Linux on the Samsung NC110 netbook?

I'm having 2 problems:

  (1) The 'Fn+' controls (e.g. external monitor, WiFi on/off) appear to
be dependent on Windows apps.
    Anyone found a Linux with equivalent function?

   (2) Have been unable to connect an external monitor and get the
NC110 to display on it.
         (Compared with my Toshiba laptop, whose BIOS seems to detect
           the external monitor and immediately switches to it.)

(Been running Mageia-2, now trying Mageia-3-Alpha2.)

Looking at it from a different point of view, has anyone here found a
netbook that has neither of the above problems when running Linux only?!

  No, but I found some interesting postings in the forum! Thank you.

The solution seems to be Linux Mint orientated, so I don't see how it
could be obtained in Mageia.
  (Having said that, I just found a directory in the netbook's /home:

    .samsung-tools

containing a file:  session.conf, containing:

On a different note, if the solution pointed to by the web site you
mentioned needs Linux Mint, I do have a Linux Format DVD containing
'Linux Mint 13 KDE'.
    Failing all else, perhaps I will try an install of that.

Debian/Ubuntu/Mint is usually good at a wide range of hardware,
but Knoppix may be worth a try also.
There are some netbook tailored distros around.

You would probably have to investigate samsung-tools further to
see if it does what is required, or if it will in the future.

Samsung products have been very Windows orientated though
recently they announced 'opening up' with some products.

There may be better Linux support for other brands, the most
common models will be best supported.

  Have discovered a samsung-tools package in Mageia and installed it.

and the --help option shows no option to provide any of the Fn+Fx functions.
(Tried Fn+F4 with external monitor attached, but no response.)

So no help with using external monitor.

whereas I have installed Mint 13 KDE.

The only lines there that look Debian specific are:

  deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/voria/ppa/ubuntu maverick main
  deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/voria/ppa/ubuntu maverick main

Is there some way of adapting the procedure for Mint 13 KDE, or do I
need to install Mint Debian?!

Knoppix also uses Debian, here is a link to someone claiming 100%
nc110 compatibility.

The problem with plain Ubuntu might be wether it would recognise that you
require the lighter desktop options.
You would need to select Mate instead of the default probably.
It sounds like Knoppix will work out of the box.
You may have to enquire in the Knoppix or Ubuntu forums on how to
get the vga function working if it is not already.

If - with Ron's helpful response - I still cannot solve the problem
with the Samsung NC110, I shall return it and try to replace it with one
(10"-11" screen) that has:

  - No problem adopting an external monitor as display
  - A better wireless adapter than the Broadcom     (e.g. Intel)
  - 'Fn' functions that are in hardware rather than in Windows.

Anyone know of a candidate netbook, please?
