Host OS: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS System: ASUS N61JQ (laptop) Scan apps (like gscan2pdf, XSane Image Scanner, etc.) fail to detect scanner device (HP ScanJet 6350Cxi) with headset plugged in. As soon as I unplug the headset, scan apps work fine. Any ideas?

My guess is that the USB port "closest" to the headset port may be shared? If so, this is not documented in the User Manual. But, I could be missing something.

Correction ... connecting the scanner to a "different" USB port with headset plugged in does "not" work either (contrary to my 1:30 PM post, which has been canceled).

And there is obviously a bug. So take some responsibility for yourself man! Fix it and recompile. Linux is an amateurish OS built with amateurish drivers. For your information, GNU/Linux has already for long surpassed proprietary UNIX in professionalism, robustness and quality. A great number of hardware vendors is working with the Linux kernel development team directly and are releasing their driver code under the GPLv2. There is no other operating system on the planet that supports as many hardware architectures and as many hardware peripherals out of the box as GNU/Linux. In addition to that, 96% of the world's most powerful supercomputers are running GNU/Linux, and it also runs on IBM mainframes, on the bare metal. When something goes wrong in proprietary operating systems, there's nobody to blame either. And if you won't believe that, then please read their EULAs more carefully next time. > That is what open source is all about. There is nothing professional > about it. Yes they have been saying this for many years. And we are still waiting.
And apparently my reply yesterday on my Linux machine never posted.
Nothing new there. Linux always has a nasty habit of huge
disappointments for me anyway.

No way! I am sure it is very easy to snow people like Bob Villa, but the
rest of us are not so gullible. If you are going to try to support your
position by bull (people who uses dishonesty annoy me), you can at least
do better than that. Even newbies to Linux knows that Linux drivers and
applications are very weak compared to Windows or even the Mac.

Boy you sure leave a lot of important parts out, didn't you? So what
choice do they have? As the keepers of the mainframe are aging and they
are going to be retiring soon enough and take their knowledge with them.
And who can find younger people who understands mainframe OS?
Plus mainframes have been on the decline for 15 years now. And companies
like IBM have been looking for more opportunities and now selling
mainframes to compete with the server market. And any lame OS can handle
operating a server. So here comes Linux. Although it had taken IBM years
to port the drivers over to Linux. IBM has been trying to get Linux
usable on mainframes for 12 years now.

Naw, piece of cake. If it doesn't work, take it back to the place you
bought it and go buy their competitor that does work. Believe me,
developers learn really quickly when they have high return rates.

You are so confused! "I never give them hell; I just tell them the truth
and they think it's hell."

Looks like you earned a friend Aragorn. As the more bull you use, the
more Bob will like you. You see Bob has this evil streak in him. As he
also enjoys telling people to replace all of the wrong parts that isn't
the problem just to be mean to strangers.

But Linux is supported via virtualization as a vm or LPAR, or on a dedicated processor, a regular CP or a special Linux CP called an IFL. http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/linux/solutions/ifl.html >Plus mainframes have been on the decline for 15 years now. Mainframes continue to capture more and more of the big datacenter market share because they can replace thousands of smaller servers. >And any lame OS can handle operating a server. But it takes real sophistication to run a EeePC netbook, right? :-) After all, if Ghu, the great, had meant us to have fault tolerant high volume real time transaction processing systems he'd have given us powerful mainframe computers and flexible open source operating systems. Talk about bus errors! You sure missed this one.

Many, if not most of which were authored with industry/vendor cooperation, with noted exceptions rearing their ugly head now and then. These 'cursory glance' comments are pretty much always from someone who didn't look long enough to make a valid assessment, yet mouthed one anyway. It really hurts their own image more than that which they wish to make a snide comment about. Some of us are able to spot it fairly easily. Sadly, it is slightly harder in person, as the world is full of 'poseurs'.

From a column in the Daily Express, Friday 3rd Feb 2012: There was a new and remarkably clean white Ford Transit van parked on a road in London's East End. Inside was a squad of SAS, fully kitted out with,sub-machine guns, knives, grenades, cammo clothes, all blacked up on a dry run for the Olympics. They are sitting in the back when they heard a scratching at the back door, and the handle turns showing a thief who had just broken into the van. A hand reaches out, grabs him by the throat and a gruff voice says 'come inside, you'. When the police arrived, after a radio call, they arrested the man. Later they said the feller just sat shivering in the cells, scared to death.

Good to know for next time I am in the market for a supercomputer, which
is like never! I'm more interested in PCs. And more PCs use Windows than
any other OS by far.
People forget! I remember back in the 70's and 80's, my mentors used to
say to not shop for an OS first and then pick your applications. No,
never! First you pick the applications that you want to run and then
pick the OS that will run them. And it is still so true today.

Is that what open source programmers use, poor tools? As that would
explain a lot. Like why Linux won't let me use a larger desktop than my
screen resolution, but Windows does. Linux won't let me compress the a
larger desktop into a smaller screen size like Windows does.
Running Windows XP on a EeePC 701/2 with an external 1440x900 monitor,
it plays full screen videos and doesn't miss a beat. Trying Linux with
the same exact hardware and it plays the same videos one fricken frame
per 5 seconds. How wonderful! No video, just a slide show.
And if you think that is bad, try using Linux as a game machine OS.
Oops, most serious gamers wouldn't even consider using Linux. How about
using Linux as a HTPC? Nope, it isn't very good multimedia department
either.
Ever compare Linux drivers to Windows drivers? Linux drivers hardly has
any settings at all. It is like somebody threw Linux drivers up in a
hurry without much thought behind them (that is if you can find Linux
drivers at all). And Windows drivers are just the opposite. Every
feature that the hardware is capable of is there.
They say you get what you pay for. And with Linux this seems to be true.
And even the paid for distros of Linux isn't much better. For example
Xandros Linux (which isn't free) is barely better than Ubuntu. At least
the drivers are slightly better anyway. Still nothing as nice as Windows
drivers though.

Sure it can. Although I am not sure how much interest there would be
for such a thing these days.

Windows doesn't either in my experience. Not only that, but when
Windows can't cope with the situation it will scramble my icons too.
That's something that X does not do.

No. Linux is what you use when you want to rescue someone that's
trying to use MacOS or Windows as an HTPC. It might be wholesale or
just piecewise. However, it's still Free Software to the rescue.
