I am trying to help a friend upgrade this heavy old beast and never
played with a Dell laptop before but I have a question about the
wireless connectivity. Apparently it has no wireless device. This
thing has not been used in five years so one of the first things it
did when I turned it on was to install a windows update, SP3. It went
forward and did take a long time but I am trying to figure out how
this happened if it has no wireless card installed. All I did was
change the workgroup to reflect the one I use. I made no other changes
and no I am unable to actually get any connectivity to my LAN. I do
see this computer on my other systems on the network but am unable to
connect. If it has no wireless device how do the other boxes even see
this laptop? It also sees one of my computers but is unable to connect
to this particular Win7 system. I have a mixture of several Win7 and
XP Pro machines all working fine but am unable to get this Dell to
connect. It's been a long time since I dealt with LAN problems and
maybe need a refresher.

Thanks for any comments.

According to:

http://www.pcworld.com/product/22038/dell_inspiron_9100.html?p=specs

It sports a V.92 modem, 10/100 ethernet, Bluetooth, 802.11a/g. So it
should have wireless. And if it can be seen by at least other computers,
it must be transmitting a wireless signal (assuming that nothing is
wired up to it). Since it is supposed to have Bluetooth, which is
another avenue for a connection. I would peek in the Device Manager and
see what it sees what is there.

So at this point I would power down the Dell and reset your wireless
modem or router and then retry. You might have to power down your
wireless for 10 seconds or more instead of a reset. This is the first
thing I would do.

If sharing isn't enabled, you might not be able to view anything on this
Dell either.

Thanks. I will try the power down event. That solution had escaped
me.

Ok, I recycled the router and still have no signs of wireless
connection. I think the fact that I see network icons on my other
systems might be from when I had the Dell wired to the LAN. I can't
see any signs of any device in the device manager. I get no connection
when I ping other systems from CMD window. Are there any other ways to
tell if a wireless device is installed?

Well if wireless is there and XP thinks it is working, it should show up
under Start and Network Connections. LAN connection should show up there
too (neither has to be connected to anything to show up here).

How do I get the network icon to show on the desktop? I remember that
being the case with other Xp configurations.

I don't recall how to get Network Connections to show up on the desktop
(don't confuse with Network Neighborhood). But if it isn't under
Start -> Network Connections. Then it should be also found under
Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.

I just returned from Staples where I purchased a Netgear N300
Wireless USB Adapter and everything of running fine now. I will return
this bucket of bolts and tell her to run the Wizard and she should
have what she wants.

 Thanks for your help.

I located that and the only thing I saw was an Icon appear that
indicated connectivity and that Icon with a red X across it when it
was supposed to be disabled but I had no other proof that there was
indeed a connection. But anyway, I have given up and installed a USB
wireless device and all is well in the network neighborhood.

 Thanks.

On specs it's listed as 802.11g. So you must have a WLAN if it is seen!

What I saw was that word "optional" and a slot where a card can be
installed. I have tried the driver disk and installed everything but
still no luck. I will power down and restart.

Thanks.

I see you've already come to an alternate solution, but FWIW, wifi would
have been enabled by an optional add-in mini-PCI card:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/SYSTEMS/ins9100/sm/upgrades.htm#
1019173

So you could open the door on the bottom side of the case and look to see
if there was a card in there.

Thanks for that. I had looked inside that when this thing first
arrived not even knowing what it was. I then located a card online but
I was in a rush to return it to the owner. Her budget it very
limited so I went with close and cheap although not by much. I am
concerned however about the limited RAM of 256M. I notice it is slow
start and takes more time then I had hoped for IE to open on the home
page. Do you know of any other limits that might show the need for
more RAM? and is this slowness even a memory issue? I have not
installed any applications as it will only be used for email and
surfing.

 Thanks.

Al

256MB is much too low. It was barely adequate when XP was first
released, and is less so now with SP3 and all the updates. When XP was
first released you needed at least 384MB to make XP run at least as well
as Win98/2K, but with all the changes to XP over the years, IMHO you now
need around 512-768MB to get practical use out of an XP system.

According to crucial.com the 9100 can accomodate 1GB per slot for a max
of 2GB. You might have 2 128MB sodimms or a single 256MB in there now.
Change one slot to a 512MB or 1GB and you should get a noticeable
improvement in boot times.

Another step to counteract the slowness of IE would be to switch to
Google Chrome. It's faster and less buggy.

thanks for that. I really can't believe that Dell or anyone would
offer a computer with XP and a P4 3gig processor and stock it with
such a small bank of RAM with a 40G HDD to boot. I hope this woman
takes my advice and spends a minimum on a free computer she inherited.
A shame otherwise. I left that link on her desktop yesterday.
