I noticed that this place

has two Dell D610 battries: one rated at a higher voltage-- 14.8 v
@2200mAH-- and another one at 11.1 V @ 4400 mAH. There's only a three
dollar differnce in price, but I have to wonder what's the best one to
buy in terms of performance? Higher voltage or higher current?
Comments, anyone?

The one that is 11.1V is the original voltage for a D610. Batteries are usually 3, 6, or 9 cell depending on capacity (mAH). If you double or triple the cells in parallel the voltage remains the same but the capacity increases.

I' ve been in electronics for a *long* time and I got that, thanks;
but I still don't know which is a better battery to buy-- if there is
actually a "better battery,"  I've had this Dell laptop for over two
years and much is still a mystery as sooo many things need to be
replaced, fixed, or upgraded. Oy.

11.1 is the proper voltage...when I replaced my wife's Dell 6-cell (Inspiron 1545) I went with the 9-cell. Same voltage.

Hi Ron!

14.8v x 2.2AH = will deliver 32.56 watts in an hour
11.1v x 4.4AH = will deliver 48.84 watts in an hour

So you get about 50% more capacity in watts with the 11.1v one. And it 
should run 50% longer than the other 14.8v one.

Okay, I got that, and many thanks. My concern was with the actual 14
volts-- would that be excessive voltage and possibly cause damage-- or
acceptable; the documentation for the D610 is pretty sketchy when it
comes to power specifications.

Yes I too worried about that too. But I have a lot of Gateway batteries
at rated at 10.8v. Although I have one rated at 14.4v and I worried
about it. Although I have used it for years with no problems at all with
multiple laptops no less (some even different model numbers). Each cell
of a Lithium can vary 3.2v to 4.2v depending on the charge. So they are
a bit forgiving at the battery side anyway.

But in your case, the 14.8v one has less capacity. So grab the 11.1v one
with more capacity. And you don't have to worry about the extra voltage
anyway. ;-)

	I was always told that too many amps is OK but too many volts will
let the smoke out.  One time I connected the 12 volt lead to the 5 volt pad
and it sure enough did.  Another time I had a 20volt transformer and the end 
fit the hub I was trying to plug in so I used it even though it said 16.5
volts DC and the smoke got out that time, too.  So I'd be scared to connect
a 14.4 volt input to something marked 11 volts DC.

Yes I totally agree. As in the design, the engineers could choose how
far you could push it. Although in my example, both voltage batteries
are sold by the manufacture for the same model (and both are genuine
Gateway batteries). You figure they know what they are doing. ;-)

Yeah, I was wondering that myself; why make a 14 volt battery that
actually would give you less working time than the 11 volt battery; it
semed to be an exercise in pointlessness-- but what the hell do I
know?  :-)

And speaking of futility, what's with the so-called "refresh" button?
Pressing it does exactly *what?*

These figures assume that the battery is completely discharged after an
hour which is not likely in normal use.

2.2AH means that if drained at 2.2 amps, it will be discharged in 1
hour.  Same for the other battery being drained at a 4.4 amp rate.

Multiplying those currents by the voltage (ignoring the drop in voltage
as complete discharge is approached) Gives the wattages shown.

It is pretty easy actually. Where it gets complicated is that lithium 
batteries the internal resistance changes over time.
