I'm not sure what the intersection of Gentoo Linux users and Apple II users
looks like (hopefully it's more than just me), but I've knocked together an
ebuild that quickly gets you up and running with KEGS. It's in my Portage
overlay, under app-emulation:

https://github.com/salfter/portage

Assuming you already have layman working, installing KEGS looks something
like this:

1) sudo layman -a salfter
2) sudo emerge kegs
3) cp /usr/share/kegs/boot.hdv /usr/share/kegs/config.kegs ~
4) sudo modprobe snd_pcm_oss
(fix your /etc/conf.d/modules to do this at boot)
5) ./xkegs
(or you can find KEGS in your program launcher menu)

The ebuild pulls a KEGS bundle from Asimov that includes ROM images and a
hard-disk image with System 6.0.1; you just need to copy the disk image and
config file to your home directory so they're writable.

There's likely a larger number using GSport (based on KEGS, but 20 years
newer) - would there be anything standing in the way of getting this
working on that code base?

Sorry, math failure... only 10 years newer, but still...

The build process doesn't look too different from KEGS, but a quick attempt
at building it produced this error:

g++ -O2 -Wall -fomit-frame-pointer -std=gnu99 -march=native -DHAVE_TFE -DHAVE_ATBRIDGE -DTOGGLE_STATUS  adb.o clock.o config.o dis.o engine_c.o scc.o iwm.o joystick_driver.o moremem.o paddles.o parallel.o printer.o sim65816.o smartport.o sound.o sound_driver.o video.o scc_socket_driver.o imagewriter.o scc_imagewriter.o scc_llap.o tfe/tfe.o tfe/tfearch.o tfe/tfesupp.o atbridge/aarp.o atbridge/atbridge.o atbridge/elap.o atbridge/llap.o atbridge/port.o  atbridge/pcap_delay.o xdriver.o compile_time.o  -o gsportx -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lXext -lX11

collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
Makefile:65: recipe for target 'gsportx' failed
make: *** [gsportx] Error 1

It looks like this is the final link step...the manpage for dlclose()
suggests that -ldl needs to be passed to the compiler. Doing this manually
produced a successful build.

tl;dr: Yes, it looks like a GSport ebuild should be possible.

...and now it's done. As a bonus, it patches GSport to also look in ~/.GSport
for your config file. The new ebuild is up on GitHub, so if you've already
pulled in my Portage overlay, an update will get you the new ebuild. It
still downloads the KEGS zipfile to retrieve the ROM images and boot disk
image, so you're up and running as quickly as possible.

Fantastic. Thanks!

Side note: If one wants printing on Linux, use the vars_x86linux_sdl
make file. Requires SDL 1.2 and Freetype2 to build.

That would explain why printing hasn't been working (other than through the
same mechanisms implemented by KEGS). I'll need to look into this further.

It turns out this functionality isn't in a released version of GSport, but
is in Subversion. An ebuild that pulls from Subversion is now available.
