#5309 — PLASMA 2.0 Developer Release

After a year-and-a-half on languishing, I spent some time tracking down the last known JIT bug: a module load/unload interaction with JIT compiled routines. A serious pain to track down, but it seemed like a good excuse to build a Developer Release:
https://github.com/dschmenk/PLASMA/blob/master/doc/Version%202.0.md

There's even a work-in-progress PLASMA programming series on YouTube that has all the production values of Public Access T.V.:

How do I get the Apple /// hard drive image to show up? Assuming I boot with 'PLASMA2-FPSOS.PO' and have 'PLASMA2.2mg' in the CFFA but it's not showing the hard drive with 'v'.

Make sure you install *your* SOS.DRIVER. The one I have defaults to a CFFA in slot 4 (I think).

Thanks for the reply. I'm attempting to run it under MAME, but this doesn't seem to show the HD...

mame64 apple3 -skip_gameinfo -window -flop1 PLASMA2-FPSOS.PO -sl4 cffa2 -hard PLASMA2.2mg

Is there a minimal SOS.DRIVER that would allow me try it out under this situation? Pardon my ignorance on how to create a SOS.DRIVER. Would it work on a real /// if I dropped a CFFA in slot 4? The other slots would be empty.

The CFFA(v2) doesn't support connecting random virtual disk images -
that's a CFFA3000 thing.

Sorry, I just don't use MAME. Works great on real hardware, though.

I think it could be a problem with MAME not recognizing the hard drive format. I've run into this before with disk images. I can try converting it. Will let you know if I figure anything out.

Do I have to use CFFA3000 on ///? Does it have the boot menus like on a //? Or can I use an older CF-based CFFA card as well? I have both cards but would rather use the CF one.

I have a ///, but I am loathe to take down and reconfigure all 300 pounds of it.

It doesn't matter what mass storage you use as long as there is a driver for it.

Frank, if the Apple III does not support 65C02 instructions then try "-sl4 cffa202" instead.

Thanks. Tried that already. If you do 'MAME listslots' the cffa2 shows up as "6502 firmware" and there's no cffa202. MAME's imgtool doesn't seem to have a drive image format that would work either. MAME A3 doesn't seem to like 2mg, though I've used 2mg's with A2 before. I have one hd image that works on A3 but it's a format I've never seen before (.hd). I also tried putting the files on a 32mb 2mg which also didn't work, though I think SOS has a 16mb limitation.

It's a separate driver - a2cffa02.zip. 6502-specific version. The a2cffa2.zip is 65C02-specific.

It has to be a CHD. No .po or .2mg.

The A3 CFFA driver expects the first block to contain partition information, so this stops the mounting of po/2mg images directly in MAME like you can for the A2 emulation :-(

I've been playing with a SOS driver that interfaces to the Prodos block interface card firmware, so then you can use this method in MAME for the A3. I hope to release it soon. Just needs some tidy up and some final testing.

I have swapped the driver into the A3 plasma disk image to try, you can get the disk image here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/pwcftxme8ereclh/PLASMA2-FPSOS_PB.PO?dl=0

And I ran it using MAME like this
mame64.exe apple3 -window -resolution 640x480 -flop1 Disks\plasma\PLASMA2-FPSOS_PB.PO -sl1 cffa2 -hard Disks\plasma\PLASMA2.2mg

oh, and the driver autoscans the slots (4to1) looking for the firmware signature, so should work in which ever slot you use.

/Rob

Yes! I was able to get it to work with your boot disk and check out the demo. Thank you.

Sorry, wasn't trying to turn this into a mame thread, but it's the only emulator for Apple III that seems to work.

Thanks for all the help, Rob!

Frank, I'm glad Rob did all this work for mame. I have put a lot of work into the Apple /// support, so I'm happy to see it getting used - even if on an emulator. Here is what yo can do to play with the Apple /// specific demo:

After booting, type:

S /PLASMA

This resets the PLASMA location to the hard drive so it can access all the system modules. Now:

P /PLASMA/DEMOS/APPLE3

Change the prefix to the Apple /// demo

+GFXDEMO APPLE3.PIX

Be a little patient. This demo wasn't written for speed. You should be able to play with the other demos in the /PLASMA/DEMOS directory and below.

One thing I do on my Apple /// PLASMA boot floppy is create an AUTORUN file to set the PLASMA directory automatically. To create your own, type:

+ED /PLASMA.FPSOS/AUTORUN

Once the blank editor window comes up, enter:

S /PLASMA

Now, press the ESCape key. You are in command mode. Type:

W

Writes out the file to floppy. And:

Q

Quits back to PLASMA command line.

Yep, I also did not want to divert from the main topic of the new PLASMA release. It really amazes me the amount of work that has been put into to this, a fantastic effort. I must try and spend some more time with it.

And that command line on the /// is really nice, sort feels like it should have been like this from the start.

Thanks for the quickstart. Yes I was able to check out the graphics demo this morning. I've done some mono images on the /// using bmp2dhr and SOS interp file I wrote, and have done some experimentation with the other /// video modes by hitting the softswitches, so it'll be fun to dig into this.

Rob do you envision your driver being a more 'universal' /// driver? Seems a bit tricky to get anything actually running on that machine. Documentation can be a bit sparse, too.

Yes the command line interface is nice. Seems like something the /// needed from the start. Inspires me to set up my actual /// with a cffa card.

The file that works on the A3 is from here:
https://github.com/datajerk/apple3rtr/blob/master/apple3.hd

The project shows that it was made with 'chdman'.

Nice! It's been great seeing the development of PLASMA unfold over the

Thanks, David. It's been a series of starts and stops, but John Brooks poked me to get things moving again. So many projects, such little time!

Well, now that there are some top Apple /// developers looking, I'm looking for a little help on the module that launches other SOS.INTERP files. The idea is to be able to run any Apple /// program from the PLASMA command line. The SOS module tries to establish an environment that looks like it just booted and loaded the SOS.INTERP file. However, I must be missing something. The only SOS.INTERP file I have successfully run is Pascal. All the others lock up. Anyone want to take a crack at it?
