Golden Gate uses alternate data streams for the resource fork and
finder info under Windows. Rumor has it, alternate data streams
were added for their NT-era AFP server (Services For Macintosh).
Interestingly enough, the Finder Info stream (AFP_AfpInfo) has
dedicated fields for the ProDOS file type and auxtype.

Alternate data streams are probably the second-best xattr
implementation (streams are files). Solaris is best (xattrs
are files and the parent file can be treated like a directory).
OS X is ok (only the resource fork is seekable and the ugly
/..namedfork/rsrc hack is ugly). Linux is barely usable (64k
size limit, most file systems don't support it (or require
extra mount flags to enable), cp needs extra flags to copy xattr,
etc).
