You will have encountered them before, but didn't realise it... When you download a file from the Internet or another computer, Windows sometimes warns you and asks you to confirm whether you really want to run it etc. How does it magically know? As is usually the case, there is no magic involved. ; - ) Windows stores the origin of the file in an ADS. You can view the streams with DIR /R <filename>. You'll see something like: TortoiseSVN-1.9.6.27867-x64-svn-1.9.6.msi TortoiseSVN-1.9.6.27867-x64-svn-1.9.6.msi:Zone.Identifier:$DATA The second line is the ADS which contains the file origin. You could view it: notepad.exe TortoiseSVN-1.9.6.27867-x64-svn-1.9.6.msi:Zone.Identifier The magic is laid bare: [ZoneTransfer] ZoneId=3 ReferrerUrl=https://sourceforge.net/projects/tortoisesvn/files/1.9.6/Application/TortoiseSVN-1.9.6.27867-x64-svn-1.9.6.msi/download?accel_key=61%3Ab9d24ede-77cc-11e7-8713-0200ac1d1d95&click_id=b9d25154-77cc-11e7-8713-0200ac1d1d95-1&source=accel HostUrl=https://superb-dca2.dl.sourceforge.net/project/tortoisesvn/1.9.6/Application/TortoiseSVN-1.9.6.27867-x64-svn-1.9.6.msi Cheers, Nick.
