#5364 — A small problem with a Win network

I have four computers in the house office LAN connected, each with a
version of VRPC installed and these all network okay.

The small problem I have is with the Win side of the networking, and
before I post the detail of the problem, I thought it courteous to ask if
anyone here might help.
If not, tell me to pee off... :-)

Hi Chris,

In our home office...
I have four computers running Win 10. All connected to the same router LAN.

In Windows Networking:

All the different computers Network & Sharing Centre > Advanced Sharing
Settings, are identical

Computers 1,2,3 can see each other.
But they cannot see Computer 4

Computer 4 can see all the other computers and itself

I can ping all computers from all computers including C4.

I can‘t fathom why computers 1,2,3 can‘t see computer 4?

I'm still working on it, but have run out of ideas.

Make sure computer 4 is in the same workgroup.
Make sure computer 4 is not being blocked by the firewall for some reason, 
but ICMP (pings still works).
Are the folders you want to see on Computer 4 shareable?

See if any of that helps for starters.

All the above were okay...

The answer was:

On the C4 computer...Click the Network icon on the Taskbar, then the
actual Name of the connection.

This opens the Settings-Ethernet page.
Click the Name of the Network, which opens the "Network profile page".


For some reason, the C4 Network profile page was set to "Public" while the
other three computers Network profiles are "Private".

Changing the setting to "Private" and all the other computers can now see
Computer 4.

Yea, sorry about that, I obviously read your suggestion on the day but got
overwhelmed by my workload on some house stuff/work that needed doing, so
never got back to it. (Particularly as I had to spend many hours over two
days in the loft in this heat, running a Cat5e cable) :-(

Though it must have registered in my OLD brain, so when I was fiddling
about with the problem early today, I went there and did the required
without really thinking about it...

A bit late perhaps.  ;-) But thanks for prompting me in the right
direction, appreciated.

Oooh!  I can feel the mega discomfort from here.

Don't things always go wrong at the worst possible moment. I'm trying to
do house repairs in this heat.

Also battling with EE as PlusNet are transferring me over. All their
mechanisms to order a Wi-Fi extender fail.

The EE router is much better at Wi-Fi then the PlusNet one. Might want to 
wait till you install the new EE router first.

I also moved from Plusnet to EE a few months ago.

Why are you using any ISP supplied equipment?

It is always the cheapest bulk bought piece of shite, that will provide 
the very minimum level of service. If they offer it for free, stick it 
in a drawer, in case of a lightning strike or something.

Then go and get a decent branded router which can form a WiFi mesh 
network with other devices from the same vendor. This will work a 
thousand times better than a ISP supplied POS router and a different POS 
extender.

Maybe because in order to use Digital Voice from that ISP, they have to 
use the supplied router.

I know you like Asus devices, I will not now touch them as they as now a 
piece of 'shite' as you call them. Been hacked, etc..

That is exactly why I did not want to move to EE - so I have stayed
with Plusnet for broadband, with my own router, and VOIP from another
supplier. Number port completed today.

Just a wild stab in the dark.. Are all 4 computers set to Private
network as opposed to public?

Having checked that, check the file and print sharing settings on
each computer for private AND All networks, public networks settings
should be off.
