Philip,

I know you know this already, but the real answer is to use my Super 
Widget Package (free from my site). I developed this as a simple, 
non-quirky way to construct serious Java GUI's inside Mathematica. 
Unlike the GUIKit, it also comes with some half-decent documentation!
