This might be (a bit) OT on comp.lang.ada, but as Ada is - or should be - the number one real time programming language, I thought probably you could help me. (Also, there doesn't seem to be that much traffic on comp.realtime, though I know there are some good people there, too.) Anyway, take a look at this: http://user.it.uu.se/~embe8573/flowchart.png Is there a tool to draw such diagrams? (In general, the details may vary.) I don't need a tool to compute runtimes, preemptions, etc., out of raw data, and then draw, no, I'm going to draw everything manually, only, I thought there might be a tool to do it. Otherwise, I thought about buying those big white-blue-ish sheets that engineers used (and should use, still, if they have style), and draw them by hand. Also, I contemplated the idea of drawing them on a whiteboard, and then shoot it with a camera. I don't know. Doing it with gimp or even Dia doesn't seem that attractive. -- Emanuel Berg - programmer (hire me! Perhaps this is the best advice yet, as I am not that inclined to much about with Wine. -- Emanuel Berg - programmer (hire me! There isn't any support for CIS diagrams in pgfgantt, but with lots of trial-and-error modifications and hacks, I did an example that could serve as skeleton code, so I should be able to produce the 15 or so scenarios I have to cover hopefully by just putting in digits in slots. Note though, I'm no LaTeX expert, so this is rather a demo that this type of task (uh) can be done with this method, and with a reasonable effort. The diagram: http://user.it.uu.se/~embe8573/cis/1-2.pdf The LaTeX code: http://user.it.uu.se/~embe8573/cis/1-2.tex Thank you Alex. I'm sure you could do it with LibreOffice Draw, but if Dia isn't attractive, then I doubt if Draw would be, either. Optimally I'd like a tool where you "draw" by entering digits. (As a method of drawing, not a basis for computation.) Using Dia would be fine for one ore two such diagrams but I have scores to do, so then I prefer pen-and-paper to the mouse every day of the week. > BTW, that isn't a flowchart. I'm not sure what you are trying to illustrate (the png
renders here as white-on-black):
- a digital timing diagram E.g., the timing relationships
of inputs and outputs in a digital system (which would
include "hi", "lo", "don't care", "float" levels) AND
their causal events (e.g., "this edge coupled with that
level initiates this transition...")
- task execution (appears to be what the text addresses)
- task *eligibility* (release vs. deadline)
etc.

Lots of "Illustrator-like" tools can be used for this purpose.
Even CAD programs (where you can more readily specify the dimensions
of boxes/events)

Decide if what you are doing is informal or formal and
whether you have (or *care* about "dimensions" for each
of these timelines.
If you are drawing informally or just to show the *general*
relationship between these, all you really need is something that
makes it easy to draw straight lines/boxes.
If, instead, you want to show that this box is exactly "25" in
duration and, if you end up having to displace it "3 units"
in the course of drawing it, you might want a tool that has a
convenient "grid" that it enforces ("snap to") *or* allows
dimensions to be "entered, manually".

Yes.

That should be deductible if you compare the diagram to
the task set and the task's parameters.

I don't know if it is informal or formal; as for the
dimensions, they must be consistent on a per-diagram
basis. If one task executes for 5 something, and the
other for 3, then that other task should have an
execution box that is 3/5 the length of the first task.

Yes, both those alternatives would be OK but best would
be to just enter digits.
