SubjectUsing a public IP-address in my home private network?

Hi!

This is probably a simple/easy question to answer, the question is, how do I add a public IP-address to a private network?

Lets say I have 2 computers in a home network connected to a switch, and then the switch is connected to a router.

One of the computers is configured with a private IP-address (10.10.10.10) in the same subnet as the router (10.10.10.11).
The outside interface of the router has IP-address 20.20.20.20.
The second computer should be configured with an external IP-address (30.30.30.30).

How do I set the network up in the easiest/best way?

Is the following setup a valid configuration of my network?

comptuer1(10.10.10.11) - switch - 10.10.10.11(router)20.20.20.20 - internet
                           |
computer2(30.30.30.30) ----

If it is, then I guess all I need to do on computer2 is to add a default route to 10.10.10.11?

I.e.
#route add 10.10.10.11/32 dev eth0
#route add default gw 10.10.10.11

Or how do you add an external IP-address to a private network?

That leaves room for the reply indicators and conforms to Usenet posting
guidelines. Some subject matter experts might not respond to your

Buy a second address from your isp.

Depends on your router. In my case I told the router what ports I want
forwarded to what LAN ip.

If you did that change computer2 to 10.10.10.30. Then if you were at
work you could get into computer2 with a ssh some_user@194.237.142.7

Want to see your web page on computer2, just put
194.237.142.7 in your browser url box.
Pretty simple.

The problem is how in the world does the outside world know where to
send packets addressed to the public IP? It has no idea where it is
located. The problem is not with you sending out packets, but them
sending them to you.
Now, you could somehow get the owner of the subnet on which that
computer is located to somehow set up their routing tables to get those
packets to you, but the usual way (sending out arp request packets--
what MAC address owns this IP address) will nto work, since you are not
on the subnet to which they send arp requests.

Ie, you are going to have to get together with whoever actually owns
30.30.30.30 and negotiate with them how to get packets to you.

Lets say I "own" the subnet 30.30.30.0/24, how would I do it then? Would my router have to "talk" som routing protocol to announce where the subnet 30.30.30.0/24 is located?

Or is there some other way to solve this?

From what you have indicated so far. pretty simple.

You bought 30.30.30.30 from some internet provider. With it you provided
them with a domain name, say, darkstar.com and you tell friends and family
about it.

They put darkstar.com in their browser, it asks the DNS server
to get an ip address for darkstar.com.
A dns server resolves it to 30.30.30.30, browser sends out packets.
They get routed to your provider who accepts the packets
and forwards them to your router. Your router is set up to accept
30.30.30.30 packets and passes them to your system.

A this point, it depends on your router's configuration and how/where
you have connected the pc to the router.

Assuming a fairly decent isp provided home use router, you would tell
the router's firewall to NAT whatever you want open to the WAN to passed
to the target LAN pc (computer2) who's LAN ip address is x.x.x.x.

No, the ISP would do that for you.

Then you would tell the router only one thing: that the following
addresses are in fact externally valid, and not top use NAT on them.

So the routing is like this.

ISP 'owns' the block of public IP addresses of which they normally hand
pout just one, for your router. In this case they hand out - say - 4.

IP packets to those addresses come to your ISP because it 'owns' them.
Never mind how.

ISP 'knows' they are for you, and sends them to your router.

Your router has to be 'told' that they are on the ethernet.

So it will forward them there.,

In the reverse direction you probably set up a default route on the
boxes using those IP addresses to forward packets to the router. The
router will need an additional IP address that corresponds to that
network. I suspect that may well be an 'illegal' one, because frankly
it is never used by anyone except the router and the boxes..
  *

The router is then told that these addresses need not be translated, so
it sends them out as they are. With no modification of the source
address (NAT).

* this is the only bit I am not totally clear about

> Or is there some other way to solve this?
>
Since you haven't said what the actual problem is, its hard to say :-)

The normal way to make box inside a NAT setup accessible is to still use
NAT but accept incoming packets on specific ports and forward them to a
specific machine on the internal network, that allows you tyo have one
web server, one FTP server, one telnet server etc etc that are globally
accessible on the IP address used by your router. But not more than one
session per port is possible.

The other way is to get that block of IP addresses from your ISP and
tell the router that you have them. It should sort the rest out
automagically. The bigger problem is that on the cheaper routers how to
do this is poorly documented and often badly implemented, because so
few people actually do this, its not worth spending time on it when it
represents 1% of sales or less. People setting this sort of stuff up are
likley to go upmarket for a SOHO or small business router anyway.

For the reverse direction, i.e. from computer2/30.30.30.30 -> router, is this a good/possible setup? :
The default gw of computer2 could be 10.10.10.11 (router address), i.e. default gw is on a different subnet. This way the router doesn't need an additional IP-address. Hence, there would be two different subnets on my LAN.

The problem to solve is to find the easiest way/setup to have a public IP-address inside my private network.

get one from your ISP and follow instruction manual on your router.

Hey if you can get your router to accept packets from computer2.
Then it is possible. Is it good, is your call.

> The default gw of computer2 could be 10.10.10.11 (router address),

That is pretty much the only way they will get there based on what you
have told us so far.

Put this in your head. If someone on the internet wants to connect to computer2
then the packets will arrive using the ip address you have leased from
Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson. That address will be 194.237.142.7
or in the range 194.237.142.0 - 194.237.142.255

Again, a "public ip address" is not going let anyone connect to computer2
unless they use setnip01.ericsson.net or 194.237.142.7

You can get a domain from some domain vendor like darkstar.com, but
you will have to provide them with your ip address 194.237.142.7

Hm, the setup is just an theoretical example, and has nothing to do with 194.237.142.7 :)

The address 194.237.142.7 is not part of the question :)

You seem to be under the misapprehension that it’s impossible to route
more than one address to a given customer. It does require cooperation
from the ISP, and the OP’s ISP may or may not offer that service to
domestic customers (some do, some don’t), but as a general statement it
is technically possible.

(With the use of a tunnel it needn’t involve their ISP. My IPv6
connectivity falls into this category, for instance. You could argue
that I just have two ISPs, connectivity to one being via the other,
though.)

No I am not.

And there you have one of the restrictions found in this thread.
OP has indicated a single ip only.

The "misapprehension" that I have is the original post indicating 2
computers connected to one router and the desire to have computer2 to have
a public ip address other than the _public_ one assigned to his router.

"public ip address" being the operative description leading me to the
conclusion the OP wants anyone on the Internet to be able to use it
to make a connection from their machine to computer2.

The evidence remains against this claim.

The point I’m making is that they can ask their ISP to route further
addresses to them. Their ISP may of course say no, but it’s the first
option to explore.

What don't you understand in this ?

Sure. Been there, done that. It works.

You mean that this is a homework assignment? Finding the easiest way to
have a public IP-address inside my private network is not a problem
unless it is artificially made into one. It is at best a solution to
some problem you are having. What is THAT problem? Otherwise if this is
an assignment, read your class noted, the text and figure it out
yourself.

Indeed it is not a problem.

Why should there be a problem ?

One LAN, some hosts with private addresses and some hosts with public
addresses. Plain and simple. No problem at all.

Are you using IPv4 or IPv6? Is the router configured to use Network
Address Translation ("NAT") so that a single public IP number is shared by
all the computers on your private network, with your own router allocating
the local IP numbers?

How many public IP numbers has your ISP allocated to you? How many
seperate internet connections have you got?

What is the switch for, if you have a router?

So far, so good; that is a typical IPv4 NAT router configuration. Those IP
numbers are in one of the groups reserved for private local use.

> The outside interface of the router has IP-address 20.20.20.20.

In that case you are working for for Computer Sciences Corporation in
Virginia or Louisiana and really should be asking your IT department for
help. Or not be doing whatever it is you're trying to do.

The US Department of Defence? I suspect not!

Perhaps starting with the instructions that came with the router.

No.

First, get the IP addresses you need from an ISP.

Now now. 20.20.20.20 is clearly a fake.

At least a smiley would have been appropriate in your post.
