For how many more years are we going to tolerate the burden
of accomodating the whims of the ART students?

The need to read masses of `man *` which are contaminated by the
NOISE of eg:
"..The default quali-
fier is trace....
....for-
got that one.
...means liter-
ally -e trace=open...
.....involve process manage-
ment. ..........."
   is absurd.

It's like having the illiterate cleaning lady mess-up your
delicately laid-out circuitry, while you're sleeping.

If the ART students want to practice straight-line margins,
let them do so for the women's fashion magazine, or do
brick-laying.

The unwarrented instusion of pdf is a similar curse.

Rant makes no sense.

You can use any formatter you like for man pages,
including troff which is capable of rendering tables
with real borders, proportional justified fonts,
multiple font sizes, bold, italic,
and line drawings.

I use Emacs (M-x man), and get nicely formatted,
easily searchable pages.

No!
The lowest-common-denominator: ie. man <ID>;
should give plain-text WITHOUT broken-words to "get nicely formatted"
for the <ladies fashion magazine> type.

Emacs is an EXTRA-layer.
And the ballet dancers who want extra-extra can have music and lavender
scent too.

If you're navigating in difficult conditions, and quickly need info,
being forced to access Emacs, is like needing a governmenbt application
to scratch your ear.

First of all get the minimal/basics right!

Oh, really, hyphenation is the complaint?
I thought the complaint had something to do with art students.
Not much one can do about hyphenation.
There's a command line switch to reduce it.

I guess I never noticed because incremental search
does okay, even with hyphens.

As far as "being forced to access Emacs",
again, rant makes no sense. At least for me.
I'm already in Emacs when I first notice I need a man page.

M-x man just uses the troff output, so has the same justification and
hyphenation issues that the OP was complaining about. He’s not unique:
some man pages turn it off, for instance those generated by Pod::Man:

.\" For nroff, turn off justification. Always turn off hyphenation; it makes
.\" way too many mistakes in technical documents.
  .if n .ad l
  .nh

You could probably make this global by modifying /etc/groff/man.local.

Above is based on Debian wheezy.

I think you mean nroff output.
Emacs sets $TERM to "dumb".

Never heard the complaint before.
I suppose the package owner might listen, the current
options available are:

-rHY=flags Set hyphenation flags. Possible values are 1 to hyphenate
without restrictions, 2 to not hyphenate the last word on
a page, 4 to not hyphenate the last two characters of a
word, and 8 to not hyphenate the first two characters of a
word. These values are additive; the default is 14.

No! The default should be PLAIN.
For the arty-types who want music, lavender-scent and bouncing-monkeys
add extra switches. And to avoid such problems in future, best just
shoot the ballet-dancers.

I add this to /etc/groff/man.local; it turns off hyphenation and

.if n .ad l

Nice. On Debian-descended Linux systems (which is mostly what I've been using
over the years), I alias man to man --nj --nh I'll keep your method in
my notes for when I'm using other flavors of Linux.

What's this about?

I've seen Missy Copeland on CBS three times in December, had never
heard of her before that. She dances for the American Ballet Theatre
company, and may be their lead ballerina at some point.

I have no idea why you'd want to shoot her, she looks really good,
and she didn't seem dumb either.
