I get the graphical one. Two machines with XFCE. yast calls the TUI and
yast2 the GUI.

Er... no. One machine was fresh installed this weekend directly to 16.0
as double boot with windows 11. The other machine had 15.6 and I
upgraded it to 16.0. Installed first the experimental XFCE for Wayland;
as soon as booted, removed that, installed the classical XFCE and sddm,
switched, and rebooted.

What installation process in copying an iso to a thumbdrive?

This Linux user happened to have an older thumb drive laying around. I
never worried about the format since I wasn't copying any files greater

Common thing to do on Linux, seems to be quite difficult on Windows.

There are other methods for Windows:

https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Create_a_Live_USB_stick_using_Windows
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Create_a_Live_USB_stick_using_macOS

On Windows, you can use Etcher: <https://etcher.balena.io/>

or Rufus: <https://rufus.ie/en/>

or ImageUSB: <https://www.osforensics.com/tools/write-usb-images.html>

or SUSE Studio ImageWriter:
<https://github.com/downloads/openSUSE/kiwi/ImageWriter.exe> (oops, not
found) (obsolete method, not maintained)

I love the mousy methods on Linux. On Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, and probably
may more finding the iso in the file manager and right clicking brings up
the option for the Disk Image Writer. There is also a Disk Image Reader
but I haven't used it.

Tumbleweed, despite being KDE and having Dolphin like the Fedora box,
doesn't show the option.

You can even 'mount' the ISO and look at its contents.

I've got about 4 or 5 GUI based programs that come up when I right click
on a .iso.
Brasero disc burner seems to be the default

yes. I cannot remember if it will do a USB drive: seems not.
Anway there are other GUI options in Mint MATE. I ought to make one default

I'm lazy. With GNOME Files (Nautilus) on Ubuntu and Mint or Dolphin on
Fedora, right click on the iso and select Disk Image Writer. Job done
without remembering dd's cryptic command line.

My SUSE Tumbleweed is KDE but Dolphin doesn't have the option. So far
Tumbleweed is okay but it does have oddities.

From the original statement, copying an iso to a thumbdrive to save it or
move it around is not 'create a bootable thumbdrive'. 'cp' doesn't
reformat and a 4.2 GB SUSE iso can't be copied to a vfat device.
Formatting it to exfat works but it isn't automatic.

   Hey ! I'll try it !

I take it that treating the stick as a /dev is
   the magic secret ?

You're still better off with 'Etcher' or equivs
since they checksum/verify what you've done.

   Hey - WORKED !

Had an old usb2 stick, completely reset it with an MSDOS
part table and a FAT32 data partition. Then did yer trick.

It boots ! Touchpad doesn't work but that's an Antix
   problem.

Unless they added it recently though, 'cp' alone does
not seem to do any data-integrity checks on the dest.

Now that you've gone this far, how about changing the command to

    cmp image.iso /dev/sdX

and see whether that verifies it?
(Haven't tried it, just a thought...)
