The controls are enforced when you board a ship to go to the mainland, so those illegal immigrants can not enter the rest of Europe unless they find a way to jump. Board illegally a contraband boat or something of the sort. Some have tried and were captured. The border control at the frontier with Morocco has been subcontracted to Morocco. They can be brutal with the people attempting to cross illegally: we can not. What do you with a mass of many thousands of civilians swimming in or jumping the fence, shoot at them? We can not do that. We can not even capture them and just return them via the gate to Morocco, because that is illegal. Those that swim-ed in did not jump a protected frontier, according to a recent court decision in last July: that is precisely the reason the wasap and facebook groups claimed on the call to try the jump. So we need to process each one, one by one, slowly, and they have the right to call a lawyer and argue. So the process can take two years! Those that claim asylum and have some grounds have to stay till the procedure is resolved. Economic immigrants can be refused. Kids have the right to refuse to return to their families. The right wing is just setting fire to the situation, demanding the immigrants be just returned. They know full well that any civil servant is afraid of not crossing all the 't's in the complicated legal procedure, because they risk facing a court and being ejected from the public service for maybe 9 years. This happened to two of them. So there is a thousand and something that were processed, but not completed because they are over careful. The regional authority demands they be just ejected. So, they stalled when the government reminded them that the minors needed lawyers assigned, gratis, to continue the procedure and that the local authority had to provide them. Several weeks delays till they gave up. Many claim that Morocco is guilty of provoking the thing. The Spanish government denies this. Why? Well, if Morocco gets angry, they will just refuse the return of any of them, and we then have to take them in like it or not. Has happened before. Ah, about a hundred of them died and had to be interred locally because Morocco refused to accept them back. They just have a board with a number. I suppose they took a photo and DNA samples. Some were identified and the families came for them, but the Morocco authorities refused them all the same. Some have been caught red handed in small crimes. Those are returned instantly, after identification at the police station. This is, more or less, the situation. -- Cheers, Carlos. ES🇪🇸, EU🇪🇺;

Yeah, > history and all that but selling it to Morocco for a few tons of hashhish Is there much of an "history" edge to this? It's been with Spain since the end of the Iberian Union, so that's some centuries, indeed, but, before that, it was part of the Kingdom of Portugal*. For "historical" arguments, there'd be probably other options? * (Okay, it was possibly under the "Kingdom of the Algarve(s)" umbrella.) I'm not saying these arguments are good either way, but I'm thinking that this specific situation may be the kind of thing that people who would push for these arguments more strongly would be the ones to get most annoyed about. Also, it really would make more sense as an argument if it were part of Portugal, not Spain, given some imperialist people would probably get riled up if it were still part of the country and someone suggested letting go the first piece of the portuguese empire (which was dismantled as of 1999 (handover of Macau to the PRC) and 2002 (with the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste). > would seem to be the smart thing to do Sort of like the US saying to > Puerto Rico "You want to be free? Zap you're free. Godspeed and best of > luck." It does annoy me that the USA still has several territories that are basically second-class. It's also a huge insult to the history of the USA, besides hypocritical as hell. -- Nuno Silva

According to the Wikipedia, it was conquered by Portugal in 1415. That's earlier than Granada, on Jan 2 1492. «In the 16th century, the Kingdom of Portugal was inherited by Philip II of Spain and was annexed in 1580. Ceuta remained loyal to Philip II. In 1640, John, Duke of Braganza, proclaimed himself king of Portugal, but Ceuta did not recognize that proclamation as legitimate and continued to belong to the kingdom of Philip IV of Spain.» So, it is very old as part of Spain. A bit lazy and too fond of dallying over dessert, but reassuringly anti-work and pro 'la bonne vie'. Their biggest failing is a terrible addiction to socialism. Which means, to them 'la bonne vie' 'sans travail'. The government is expected to deliver them wealth without any actual effort being made on their part. Now I admire the sentiment, but seriously, the practicalities suck. Their philosophers are also shit. -- The biggest threat to humanity comes from socialism, which has utterly diverted our attention away from what really matters to our existential survival, to indulging in navel gazing and faux moral investigations into what the world ought to be, whilst we fail utterly to deal with what it actually is.

They throw in sovereignty as a side order and have been gaining ground. That's where it gets interesting since one of the right wing parties also was sovereignty. Quebec is sort of like Puerto Rico. They're not happy with the status quo but aren't sure what they want to do. They've floated out sort of an EU arrangement. Unlike Puerto Rico if they went their separate way it would split the Maritimes and Newfoundland from the rest of Canada. It's another historical problem coming home. Britain should have either expelled all the French or given them the eastern chunk.

Its not a question of the UK letting the Falklanders go. They WANT to be part of the UK not part of the mother rapers from Argentina. It may have been a slight exaggeration but in the '60s and '70s supposedly there were more Puerto Ricans in New York City than in PR. They had been US citizens since WWI so weren't hampered by the quotas prior to the 1965 immigration 'reform'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMIBSxZVyBI I was under the mistaken impression that 'West Side Story' was about gangs in NY. Then the Jets came out and started a dance number.

'Far right', and monsters under the bed. The ECHR and the EU are both abusing their authority to the detriment of their members. And they are themselves being abused by factions and forces inimical to democracy and the nations of Europe, There is only so far that that is a successful strategy.
