Hugh Everett, proposed a test. Basically, walk in front of an automatically firing machine gun. If the machine gun jams, you are in the universe where quantum effects caused it to jam. The multiverse exists. Repeat the experiment if you still doubt. Hugh committed suicide, so obviously we aren't in the universe where his test succeeded, for him.

Thus, randomness can only be defined "locally." That is, a random string of a pre-determined finite length must pass all tests of randomness to be judged random. A sequence of a billion identical chars would appear (very frequently) within a sufficiently large random sequence but would certainly not pass any tests of randomness. IOW, randomness is whatever passes the accepted tests for randomness.

Which definition would that be? I was trying to present an intuitive argument as to why it wasn't true. In real life, we know you can find patterns in random data, and we have to be cautious about attributing significance to them. I don't know how people formerly define a random sequence, it wasn't something I ever needed to do. Sensible definitions seem to be based upon complexity/compressibility. In a random sequence of binary digits it is clear we will find compressible subsequences, e.g. arbitrarily long subsequences of repeating digits. Leroy, himself, presents an argument as to why it is false. So I don't know why he or you suggested it should be true? What do you think a random sequence is?

Will you reject the winnings on the grounds that it should not have been possible to win given the extremely small probability? The definition of "randomness" is operational. A random sequence must conform to our established tests otherwise it is not declared to be random. Real, or true, randomness can be a very different animal.

Still not sure the 'mathematical' definition can can be achieved by real-world methods or hardware. QM does follow certain rules ... rules are constraints, meaning you'll never get SOME numbers. Oh, and 'random' MIGHT deliver you a thousand, or a million, ones in a row :-) Anyway, I think we're good for now. Ten or twenty years ... that's a bit more iffy.

If you have been delivered a million "ones in a row" can you then be certain that the next member will also be a "one." Answer: No. The probability is still 1/2.

That's one definition - maybe the most practical for "computer stuff" at the moment. > If you have been delivered a million "ones in a row" can > you then be certain that the next member will also be a > "one." > > Answer: No. The probability is still 1/2. Correct. But anything you encrypted USING all those ones, there's a certain window of vulnerability. It'll get worse as more "AI" is brought to bear. And, as I asked somebody, what happens when online 'security' becomes impossible - or just TOO unreliable ? Won't be this year ... but 20 or 25 ..........

That is the problem The classical worldview of science is that the world is - or may be considered to be - an unending chain of interlinked causes and effects, which by careful study we can *guess* at. And the success of science is down to how accurately these guesses reflect measurable behaviour. How accurately they predict some aspect of the future. Science is so to speak the clairvoyance of the bean counters. Random means that which no guess so far has been any use in predicting. Either - as in the case of chaotic systems, because sufficiently accurate measurement of the initial state is not possible, or, in the case of quantum level randomness, because it doesn't matter what the starting conditions are, the answer is never the same twice. > Oh, and 'random' MIGHT deliver you a thousand, or > a million, ones in a row 🙂 > So what? Only if it reliably does it *every time* can you say that its is not random. > Anyway, I think we're good for now. > I don't think so. You still do not really appreciate the difference between a causal and a stochastic system. But you are not alone in that. Modern 'climate science' depends on the majority of people being similarly ignorant. AS does most populist politics. > Ten or twenty years ... that's a bit more iffy. > -- New Socialism consists essentially in being seen to have your heart in the right place whilst your head is in the clouds and your hand is in someone else's pocket.

Also, not sure the Real Universe even *supports* Real RANDOM. Even QM has its constraints, a range of possibilities. Nothing to worry about NOW ... but what about 20 years from now ? I'll probably be senile or dead by then, but today's newbies will have to LIVE with this. Ultra-AIs will be at work against every kind/method of encryption. What happens when 'secure' becomes impossible ?
