I have found used HPs very good spec, cheap, and vanilla enough to run
Linux Out Of The Box so to speak.

My IdiotPhone is a Samsung. At least that is what it says on it.

People who shun the PC and do everything with their phones are
interesting, yeah. I give Apple, Google and Samsung a lot of credit,
for making a product everyone should want, and yet it cannot replace the PC.

I read an article recently where iTunes is still around although they try
to push you to an Apple Music subscription. Years ago my boss handed out
iPod Shuffles at Christmas. To load my existing music I had to install the
Windows iTunes app. What a pile of dog vomit.

One of my disappointments was CP/M-86 losing out. But then, the 8088 was
another low point. The M$ C compiler was okay but iitc they bought it from
Lattice. I think Allen was the brains and Gates the sales schlock.

Karl Marx would be spinning in his grave if he knew you were claiming
that the corporations whose power he was against were in any way the
fulfilment of his ideas.

The term for private corporations having more power over ordinary
citizens’ lives than the Government, is not “Communism”, but
“Fascism”. Or possibly “Corporatism”.

I think it’s “Fascism” if the Government themselves are in league
with the corporates.

> ... technically MS-DOS was a pile of crap.

A lot of that crap carries over to Windows today.

And oddly, some of it (the command-line limitations, drive letters and
I think “reserved” file names) actually predates it, going back to the
8-bit CP/M era.

There's something to that, yeah, but modern-day Windows is an equally
advanced environment to Unix/Linux.

That's the lovely thing about irony. :-)

I did a bit of digging and found out that the term "corporatism"
has already been taken. "Corporatocracy" seems to be preferable.

If you don't want to use the term "fascism" (even Heinlein mentioned
the term "corporate fascism" in one of his novels), the term
"regulatory capture" seems to be becoming a popular euphemism.

Point being, it’s just wrong. Communism is about the Government taking
control of the means of production, not about the owners of the means
of production taking control of the Government.

To understand the difference, just compare the USA with China right
now. One of those is doing one of those things, the other is doing the
other one of those things.

When you consider how companies are being swallowed up by bigger
entities putting power of production into the hands of fewer and fewer
people, it's almost as if we are going in the same direction with
capitalism. The only difference is that with Communism, the government
is the one exploiting the workers.

Many people view the political spectrum as a line stretching off to
infinity in both directions. The left end is known as a "worker's
paradise" by the left-wingers, and "godless communism" by the
right-wingers. The right end is known as "sweetness and light"
by the right-wingers and God knows what by the left-wingers.
(Corporatocracy, perhaps, or maybe "corporate fascism".)

In actual fact, the ends of this line curve around and meet,
meaning that Hitler and Stalin really aren't that far apart.
As somone once said in one of these discussions, the extremists
all meet somewhere around on the dark side.

Since Hitler and Stalin aren't that far apart, we don't need to wonder
what would happen if Communists and their Muslims allies in North
America would do if they manage to take a greater amount of power. War
and misery is on the menu.

The Left LOVE Islam. 'Queers for Palestine' is the most ridiculous
thing I have ever heard.

Churchill described Islam as a "militant and proselytizing faith" and
asserted that "the influence of the religion paralyses the social
development of those who follow it" In the same text, he criticized what
he perceived as a "fatalistic apathy", economic stagnation, and the
status of women under traditional interpretations of Islamic law

And, in fact that is exactly true of the hard left of today as well.
Apart from the woman bit.

The problem is that the rational materialism of the post modern
intellectuals has eroded any semblance of religious faith and morality
in those who espouse it and left a massive vacuum in those who simply
need something - anything - to Believe In. And give them some kind of
Moral Compass.

Into that vacuum steps Communism, Wokeism, Political correctness,
Liberalism, Radical Islam . the Greens and of course yer axshul Donald
Trump and MAGA.

All promising salvation. And sa simple set of moral guidelines 'America
first. fuck the foreigners' 'God is great, fuck the infidels' .
'Everybody is really nice, kill the bastards who don't think so'

And so on.

That's led to some very strange bedfellows. The paleoconservatives and
other segments of the right never had much use for Israel not that they
have any love for the Islamics. The majority US Jews are Democrats and
some are further to the left like Sanders. So now the left doesn't like
Israel which leads to some cognitive dissonance for the older lefties.

Horseshoe indeed. I think US politics is going to get weirder than usual
in the coming years. 'Weimar' comes up more frequently in conversations.

At some point, salvation comes from simply turning all electronics off
and not paying attention anymore.

That would be fine if it was just your head: I ran into the fringes of
an animal rights demonstration once. Now I have had loaded guns pointed
at me, but the wild eyed guy with the placard shrieking ' kill the
murderers' was far more scary...

You need to know where the next crazy is coming from...
