Agreed.

While you can always store the Message-IDs' cache file in a _network_
file system (eg. NFS, dropbox), you have almost no control over which
message ends up on each device. This usage scenario clearly calls for
IMAP.

What ! javascript for the mail-client?
I can't see how/where to enable that on this *2009* version.
If it need javascript enabled it's a fraud!
Is javascript part of the recent email-RFC ?!

It is a gmail feature. It is called two step validation or something -
sorry, I would have to connect via web to verify the correct name. The
thing is that it needs a web client to get the verification done,
something that a plain mail client can not do. Thunderbird does this
using javascript at some logins. You get a popup when trying to login.

Sounds more like your selection of email client based on your
requirement was the major factor in your attempt.

> I need to send and fetch in a one-shot 60 seconds connection.

Well, my requirements are not that restrictive. I have
      $ grep --count thunderbird /etc/passwd
      7
email accounts and do not want to spend any of my time checking for mail.
I have postfix installed as my Mail Transport Agent.

Each user account has a hourly cron job running fetchmail to pull down
any email and hands it off to postfix for storage in /var/mail/User_id_here
and a root hourly cron job looking at those files in /var/mail/.

I will get a pop up when any file has a character count greater than 1200.
I can then paste the pop up message in a terminal and all those accounts
will automagically launch thunderbird.

> Now I tried thunderbird [another cartoon-based system].

Well, after years of no problems on my systems, I would hesitate to
point any fingers at thunderbird as an email client.

> It's as if thunderbird must use a different password to web-based, which

Well, I think it is just plain stupid to use the same id/password at
more than one location and I sure as hell do not click links in email
messages.

> What really pisses me off, is these continual <Life is better with Coke>

Well, that is your basic warning to the clueless user that their
browser is obsolete because of several security fixes are needed and
are fixed in the newest release.

Offhand the reference about mutt seems to indicate to me that your
main problem is you have no interest in keeping your applications up
to date with the latest security fixes and that is being plain stupid,
in my opinion.

I still use PostRoad Mailer on my OS/2 machine.
