anyone using virtualbox? Since I made the new kernel, I lost cut and
paste between the host and guest machines and complaints about kernel
services not being available. Then the modules are failing on boot, so
I suppose I have another thing I need to compile or update. Does anyone
know what action to take or a resource to read up on it.

Without cut and paste it is PIA to google for it.

The kernel services you speak of are a function of VirtualBox and can
only be invoked if both VirtualBox and the hardware of your machine
support hardware virtualization extensions. Such hardware
virtualization extensions are ─ to the best of my knowledge ─ only
available on x86-64 hardware (and not even on all of it).

If your machine is an x86-64 ─ and you stated that it is a Core 2 Duo,
so it is ─ then you must enable the hardware virtualization extensions
in the BIOS before VirtualBox can enable them. Without enabling this
feature, VirtualBox will use emulation for most of the stuff requiring
direct hardware access by the guest operating system.

That was all done. I was working fine under the stock kernels. It was
only after my custom, actually I only made a change from 64_x86 to Duo
Core in the config files, that some of those services, including shared
clipboards, stopped working. That is why I think I need to recompile
some guest modules for guest kernel... or maybe even the host since in
theory they are now running on different kernel versions.

Cut & Paste between the host and guest on virtual box is handled, in
part, by a kernel module that runs in the guest itself. Your new
kernel likely does not have that virtual box kernel module (because it
is supplied by VB, and is not in kernel.org kernels. You need to study
the virtual box documentation further to determine how to add the
virtual box module to the guest kernel.

If its any help a kernel upgrade on my stock distro based system is
always followed by a recompile? of vbox kernel modules automatically.

I am guessing that you will need to do this manually somehow if the
vboxs is a guest inside the updated kernel system

Or is the new kernel itself running in the vbox?

Yep.

Exactly what I though...or if he had them installed, may require a
re-install.

Have you installed the guest additions again? I believe you need to
when you update the kernel.

I'm assuming the new kernel is on the host system.

With a new kernel, you need to compile a new VirtualBox kernel module.
And, probably, reinstall GuestAdditions.

If you have DKMS installed and the needed VB kernel headers, etc., the
VB kernel module will be updated/recompiled automatically as needed.

Check the VB manual. You might also check Arch Linux's wiki on
Virtual Box. Lots of great step-by-step instructions and
troubleshooting there.

no this is all wrong. I can't spend 6 weeks studying virtualbox. This
just has to work.

there is a source directory but it is useless.

[ruben@stat13 vboxguest-4.3.26]$ pwd
/usr/src/vboxguest-4.3.26
[ruben@stat13 vboxguest-4.3.26]$ ls
build_in_tmp dkms.conf do_dkms Makefile vboxguest vboxsf vboxvideo

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1766 Mar 17 11:12 build_in_tmp

drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 360 Mar 17 11:12 vboxvideo
[ruben@stat13 vboxguest-4.3.26]$

there is no config files, nothing.

But IIRC you didnt install a new kernel that way?

New kernels always result in a rebuild of the vbox drivers to match the
exact kernel, if you install the kernel via the distro...
