I cycle 4 disks: 3 onsite and one offsite, but nothing to do with
paranoia. I use them as short-term archive also- not just backup. I've
never had a disk failure in 20+ years that needed a true backup ("knock
on wood", as they say) but at the same time I _have_ had multiple
occasions where it has been very useful to grab a file from a month or
two previously. This due to inadvertent deletion, or looking for
previous version of the file, etc. Hence 4 disks ranging from current to
several months old has served me very well for many years.
As you might intuit, I'm not about to turn over everything I have to
Apple or Google or the like, so run my own server and take care of my
own data.
Stan

I've had a few disks die - can't think of the brand offhand but its no
longer with us and wasn't any of the big three. They excellent for a few
years but then after a succession of them failed at about the time the
guarantee ended I got smart and switched brands. The failure mode was
always the same - over a day or two the drives got progressively slower
until they became unusable.
In all cases the solution was a new drive and restore from the backup.

I have an additional USB drive thats always connected because a cron job
backs up to it at 03:00. Its there for finger trouble recovery: it
currently holds compressed backups from the last 15 days. Can't recall
when I last pulled anything back from it though, because any file I think
is at all valuable is put under CVS version control. Version controlled
files are the ultimate protection against finger trouble and of course
the version control repository gets backed up to offline storage along
with everything else.

I admit I haven't actually taken the drive apart to inspect it. But I don't buy prepackaged solutions; I purchase a bare drive and an enclosure containing a USB-to-SATA adapter, and assemble them myself. No "one-touch" button or third-party backup software which might do God knows what. In fact, my backup software consists of something like this: # mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/backup # cp -rp /home /mnt/backup # umount /mnt/backup -- /~\ cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid (Charlie Gibbs) \ / I'm really at ac.dekanfrus if you read it the right way. What's interesting about OMV in regards to this discussion? It looks like A.N.Other NAS Linux distro. I can't see anything there that handles offline files, which is the critical part of the problem. There is an OpenAFS FUSE client, so that could work for Android, Mac, etc though it's still experimental (no write support). And no pretty GUI. Very interesting thread, BTW - I have exactly the same problems... Theo

I was assuming they had a tuned WebDav server instance - that might be worth ripping off as it's probably only going to be an apache config. I was hoping that there might be a client that could handle the caching - though without certain explicit server support it may not be very efficient. > > There is an OpenAFS FUSE client, so that could work for Android, Mac, etc > though it's still experimental (no write support). And no pretty GUI. Hmm... > Very interesting thread, BTW - I have exactly the same problems... Thank you - I am surprised it's only the two of us though. Perhaps others are less picky? The commercial guys clearly see a LOT of milage in this. However, even Tonido came back to me and said their Enterprise FileCloud (that costs $$$$) can only handle NTFS user file perms and ownership - POSIX may happen in the future. I have seen this moment before, at least twice: 1) The great MS office desert - if you were on linux/BSD and everyone else was throwing Word files around. It was a long time before something better than "strings" came along and it was largely thanks to Sun. 2) Email. There was a very dark time in the late 90's/early 00's when we had a piss poor IMAP server (WU-IMAPd) and very ropey client support. Then Thunderbird got its act together and Timo knocked out dovecot and all because sane again. SMTP was less of a problem even before Philip Hazel as sendmail works, even though it had a config from hell. It does seem like many of the great solutions are down to one person, Linus, Timo, Philip. It can take a while for the momentum to roll. In some cases, a great project simply sits at risk of dying. case in point: MoSH - https://mosh.mit.edu/ - I use it all the time - it is fantastic when you have a tethered internet connection with the IP changing all the time. However, it has not gained much traction and even though adding new features like tunnels has been mooted, noone wants to do it and I expect the original guys are off doing other interesting stuff.

It's not -- I hasten to add -- that I feel any entitlement to a ready-made Open Source solution to the problem ... just that there is so much goos OS software out there that frankly I'm surprised NOT to find one. Use puppet - it does all that and more. I copped out and did my own using gambas. It took me about 3 days to write scripts that do do file copying automatically across continents with ssh, email log files with sendemail, etc etc etc. > This is the same opensource that brought us *BSD, Linux, perl, python, 2 > super RDBMSs, top rate image editing, rock solid *connected* > fileservices (NFS, SMB) allowing for the fact the latter had to be > reverse engineered. > > Have all the creative types died? Nothing ever dies in open source, and if it does, there is usually a patch for it available in 24 hours. What is happening is that all commonly requested wants have been satisfied and thus topics go quiet. So you need to get out and ask.

I got ssh server running on SSD which consumes less power. From any Linux computer from anywhere in the world, I can run Ubuntu and in nautilus set a book mark to open it as if it were a local storage. I then copy paste as needed. Linux also has rsync which is better than file copy because it avoids duplicate file transfer and can compress files on low bandwidth links. Also it can be set up with cron jobs to do sync operations frequently if needed. Or do it more cleverly if you wrote a script that checked first for changes to the file system and did an rsync when there is a need (which is what the gambas script does). I think what you are saying is you want to be able to do the same from Android and Chrome books? Then that problem is down to writing applications that can do that surely? Windows can use winscp to transfer files in a similar way to nautilus. I'm sure android must have. And so too chrome books. And I believe they both also have rsync. Again its all to do with writing applications (which probably exist any way). So, in the open source world, the cloud storage solution already exists in the form of ssh server which you can set up at home. The next thing are the applications needed to access it for the various clients that need the access all of which exist in some form or another. The last part of the problem is clever applications that only do necessary and minimal transfers - which is probably the bit 'cloud server solution providers' do differently and better to differentiate themselves. The solution with ssh servers is better than dropbox because the server is not entrusted to third parties. Dropbox in the USA can be served with secret gagging orders and the data stolen by NSA trolls which has so far resulted in two thirds of USA vendors of IT kit being de-listed from governments around the world - all thanks to NSA trolls. The system of legalised secret gagging orders and secret data theft by unsupervised trolls in government means public cloud storage is not viable for any kind of sensitive data such as employee records to commercial engineering informaton. Cloud storage is good for marketing and web content that is intended to be seen.

My idea is a "disconnected aware" network protocol and client combo. I cannot rsync all my stuff to every device because the clients don't have 3TB of storage. An ssh server is *adeqate* but not great. It does allow me to access any file securely on demand. However, I've not found any clients (yet) for Android that let me choose to cache offline copies of selected files or directories nicely. Also the SFTP clients don't really integrate with Android. This scenario: "I'm going to see Joe and he wants to look at the pics of Prague I took last month. And there's no Internet down the pub where will will meet for beer." 1) Google Drive: I can mark a whole bunch of stuff for offline access - let it sync and off I go. 2) With SFTP I'd have to manually copy that over to the phone's storage and any updates on the server would not get replicated. So Google Drive does it right (TM) but with all the problems that it's not secure (against the NSA/GCHQ etc) and Google could bugger me up. I know this - So basically, SFTP is "just about good enough" but it's no where near "great".
