#13544 — Adding journal to ext2

From"Bill Cunningham" <nospam@nspam.invalid>

SubjectAdding journal to ext2
Message-ID<maoo65$vc7$1@speranza.aioe.org>
This might sound silly. But I formatted my linux using ext2. Why not
ext3-4 some might say. I don't know. But anyway. I know you cannot be
mounted at all on the filesystem to use e2fsck for adding the journal. Not
even mounted RO. I have a hidden file .journal in the root. But try to boot
via F20 netinstall and can't seem to get the journal inode added. Anybody
have any ideas that might be able to help me?

Google for: "upgrade ext2 to ext4", read the top few hits.

OK .You know I tried google and it didn't want to show me much at al. I
tried stackoverflow and it didn't say much.

Well I took your advice concernig the first page of hits. I didn't find
out anything that I didn't already know. You have to boot from a disk. I've
never been a big fan of google like some. It's never been good to me. But
since you suggested it I will take your advice. Nothing on the first page
helped me. I am using a netinstall cd rather than a livecd if that makes a
difference.

When I google for the exact phrase above, I get this as the top hit in
the hit page:

http://lifehacker.com/5613333/convert-ext2-or-ext3-to-ext4-without-reformatting-your-hard-drive

It has a link to this:

http://www.ghacks.net/2010/08/11/convert-ext23-to-ext4/

Which provides step by step directions for how to upgrade, without
reformatting, an ext2 partition to ext4.

It is important, however, that you follow the directions given. The
"livecd" part is critical. A netinstall cd likely does not contain all
of the necessary tools to make the upgrade happen.

I did see that. But like it sayd you have to boot from a livecd. I
booted with a netinstall and it wanted me to mount a /mnt/sysimage
directory. I didn't do that and stayed in the main part of the cd and
umounted my mounted root filesystem and it worked! I also had access to
e2fsck so I was able to solve the problem.

It does! You need either a livecd or a proper full install CD (in rescue
mode). I expect that the netinstall does not have enough on it. The 'trick'
here is to NOT mount the system root file system. You need to use e2fs
utilities on the *unmounted* system root file system.

mkfs -t ext4 and restore from backup.

That sounds much easier (and safer!) than futzing around with other
solutions, unless you're just looking for kicks. Me, I have better
things to do with my time. If I were to do it, I'd make sure my backup
was good, then do the mkfs, start the restore, and go to bed.

I have an interest in filesystems and their internals as I am sure Philo can
tell you. I don't "just do things for kicks". I am trying to learn
something. I have been comparing fat32 and ntfs for a while and I'm running
ntfs right now. It's nothing like what I've heard about xfs as far as
"moderness". but that's for another place.

Yes, and if you like experimenting (like I do) then give the conversion
a try.

Just saying if it was something critical I'd not do it

The man page say that the visible ".journal" entry is generated when:

   tune2fs -j

is applied to a mounted filesystem. And that the next run of e2fsck on
the unmounted filesystem will move the journal to the normal, invisible
location.

It may be that what he did is to manually put a file .journal into the
root of the filesystem and then hope that that would be used as the
journal.
So, If he added that .journal file himself, he should remove it, and
then he should use tune2fs -j on that partition, and then reboot.
Then he will have an ext3 filesystem.

As usual he has not given us enough information to tell what it was he
did.

He will still have to /mount/ the filesystem as ext3; an ext3 filesystem
will mount as ext2, just without journaling.
