Not that I have anything that matters much on any cloud, more just as something to suggest to those who refuse to use a cloud under any circumstances because their stuff isn't secured. Some are surprisingly paranoid about them. I do use them myself, but just for completely automatic availability of stuff that I do use on the phones which is almost always prepared on the desktop systems, mostly extracts from the databases of stuff like clothes sizes, best prices I have seen for stuff I buy much of etc. > I am genuinely interested - I couldn't locate any with much googling... Haven't tried looking myself, but presumably putting that rather unique name should show some competitors. > I'm also looking for an RSS reader that can prefetch the linked story as a > web page and cache it - to deal with the spectacularly poor RSS feeds on > british media that put about 1 sentence in the RSS description! Don’t do that myself, I use the podcast system on the phone and our national govt radio broadcaster for stuff to listen to when walking for exercise. > (There are quite a lot of things that I wonder "why does this not exist"? Yeah, I just discover that the phone won't do video with no audio, you have to post process and strip the audio, pretty crude. > I guess I should brush up on my Android programming and write one... Trouble is that that can be a lot of work. The only game I play is Freecell Pro and I'd love to have that on the phone, but it’s a lot of work, particularly for the solver that that has. > I did dabble with hacking on some open source app once - an alarm clock. I've done that with Win but a combination stop watch, count down timer with the commonly used times as buttons. Better than anything I can find for the phone which I do use for some stuff I do quite a bit like the spirits distilling which has some rather complex timer ops but haven't yet got off my arse and done it for the phone which would be the most handy when doing the distilling. > I managed to hack on the features I wanted (and offered them back to the > author). Trouble I found, apart from having to run up that monstrosity, > eclipse, is there is a bugger of a lot of stuff in even a trvial app just > to make the very basics work. Yeah, that's the problem with Freecell and the timer, and it irritates the hell out of me that it shouldn’t be necessary to do all that again particularly the basic user interface stuff that you need with the phone.

I've modified an Open Source newsreader (xvnews) that no-one uses any more
and something else that I've now forgotten.
I started to look at fixing a really irritating UI glitch in "SimpleScan". I
downloaded the source, and since I've been doing this shit for a looooong
time, I first tried to build the unmodified source. It wouldn't build. It
turns out that Canonical do all kinds of weird stuff to get software to fit
into their world. I gave up. Learning curve too steep. Skills (and brain)
too old.

Eclipse is deprecated for Android development now. They've changed to Android Studio, which is based on IntelliJ IDEA.

The need is for someone to make the whole process easier by adding server application and probably web applications that allow Android and Chrome to control the transfer instead of doing it manually. The server itself would be ssh, and the primary method for file transfer would be rsync. Easy enough to do, but you might have to pay someone ;) I did my automation tool using Gambas over a couple of days. May be you can give it a try? Its not that difficult. And it does have a non-GUI mode for writing applications that run as servers which start up when the machine boots.

I have one of those android tablets laying around with a dead battery and dust all over it. It's just a piece of mineware - all it wants is evey bit of information about you it can get, and the apps it has on it can make calls and spend your money without you even knowing it! Well fuck that - it's as good as trash. Unfortunately, it's one of those ones you cannot get root access to, so you can't put something other than Android crap on it. I tried checking out the google store, more mineware. piece of useless shit "Anonymous Remailer (austria)" <mixmaster@remailer.privacy.at> wrote in message news:4038563154bf3bc284ed073b86037e48@remailer.privacy.at... > > > Tim Watts <tw_use...@dionic.net> [TW]: > TW> I took last month. Google do have great stuff - but it's (mostly) free and when it's free, you're not the user, you're the product! It's a balance. I use Google Calendar because: 1) It's bloody good - way better than Hoarde etc al. 2) I do not have much I call sensitive going in it. But I run my own email and file servers because: 1) Both have sensitive data; 2) Email is handled *exactly* as well with exim+dovecot as Gmail can manage (because there's not shortage of email clients for any platform). However, as what started this thread, the file servers do have a problem because there is (as yet) no network server/cleint app combo that is as nice on a semi connected device as Google Drive, Dropbox and several others. Regarding the apps being able to do random stuff: 1) There is a strong case of "Caveat Userus" - User Beware. The system confirms wiht you if it is OK for an app to do X Y and Z - but you get sod all choice. A better model would have been: You get to tick the boxes you want. If it blows the app up, fair enough. One example - I will not use the official Facebook app since it started asking to use the microphone - bloody cheeky bunch of bastards. 2) But *most* of the time, it works OK. 3) But occasionally, like with unofficial apps and SnapChat, the users got burned as their naked butts and danglies got slapped all over the Internet. I tend to manage by staying in the 1+2 zone, but 3 IS quite worrying as it could be my kids. It's hard to stay on top of everything.

(plus about 6 others, Mega, Filecloud, etc) but I don't trust any of their desktop apps - just use the web interface, and put nothing there that is important or sensitive, and always keep your prime copy on your own system. As far as concurrent editting a remote file, I don't have much experience with that, if I edit the file, then it is editted. (usually, recordings from our band - but I'd be kinda flattered if someone wanted to steal them!) > Regarding the apps being able to do random stuff: > > 1) There is a strong case of "Caveat Userus" - User Beware. I'm afraid that is part of the deal for having so much of the stuff for "free" (as in no purchase fee). Android is free, a lot of good apps are free, and lots of services, even if you and I don't trust them, are free. Not really reasonable to expect that to happen without some payback? I wonder, if there was a "zero gather, zero ad" version of Android, how much it would actually cost? And given you get updates, it would probably be a year on year cost too. > It urks me that my adult > children have to deal with all this, and they don't have a lifetime of > experience to learn how to filter out the wheat from the chaff so to speak. Not as much as it gets me that if you pay for Sky sat TV in the UK, it's still full of ads. Not that I do - but I am amazed people tolerate this. And they complain about the BBC TV license fee!! > I don't use that tablet anymore - cant be bothered when there is so little > point. - I hate being tracked, I like being in control of my system, and I > need a bigger screen to see what I am looking at anyway. - if I could root > the device and put some distro other than android on it, then I would > because it would make a great little coffee shop computer, but not as it is > now, All fair enough - you still have a choice thanks to linux and *BSD :)

You can buy a PC - but by the time you've loaded it up with Windows, Office etc you'll have paid as much again. Unless you go the FOSS route. Now that's the interesting thing - Android is not really a FOSS community. Android itself mostly is (although Samsung et al may put closed bits in). Virtually no apps (even free ones) are FOSS which I found utterly alien and very strange. And Android is generally bundled closed coupled with Google and they need ads in your eyeballs... It's an unusual model - that's for sure. >> I wonder, if there was a "zero gather, zero ad" version of Android, how >> much it would actually cost?
