What do people like to use these days? A casual web search turned up 
blog posts that are somewhat old.

I found recommendations for ffmpeg, eg:

    ffmpeg -f x11grab \
	    -r 30 \
	    -s ${wide}x${height} \
	    -i :0.0+${upper_left_x},${upper_left_y} \
	    -vcodec huffyuv \
	    window.avi

I've got an oldish ffmpeg installed:

    FFmpeg version 0.6, Copyright (c) 2000-2010 the FFmpeg developers
      built on Sep 27 2010 14:13:34 with gcc 4.4.1 [gcc-4_4-branch revision 150839]

Which gives me: "Unknown input format: 'x11grab'" when I try it.
(And I'm not a big fan of ffmpeg anyway, that incompatible but same
named fork is a downer.)

And for xvidcap, eg:

	xvidcap --source x11 \
	    --file window.avi \
	    --fps 30 \
	    --cap_geometry ${wide}x${height}+${upper_left_x}+${upper_left_y}

I didn't have xvidcap installed, and "apt-get install" (on my Ubuntu
12.04 work computer) failed ("Package xvidcap is not available, but is
referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is
missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source").

So I installed 1.1.7 from source.

But when I try the command line approach above, it just gives me a usage
error. Using the interactive GUI method started out okay, but it core
dumped after 116 frames.

Is there a way to do it with mplayer/mencoder? 

What else should I try?

I use a program called import for importing (exporting ;-) the desktop of
just a specific window into an image file.

I know that it can take a screen shot from your cam.

mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0 -vo png -frames 1

But is probably not what you are searching for.

Ah, I have that one installed. It's part of imagemagick, which means it
has such shitty documentation that it is almost impossible to use.

I tried this (with a window ID from xwininfo):

    import -pause 0.1 \
	    -snaps 200 \
	    -page ${wide}x${height}+${upper_left_x}+${upper_left_y} \
	    -window 0x3c00750 \
	    clip-%04d.png

After seeing the manpage:

    -pause value         seconds delay between snapshots
    -snaps value         number of screen snapshots
    -page geometry       size and location of an image canvas
    -window id           select window with this id or name

But it seems like using -page with -window means I get no output. Using
just -page, it kept changing the cursor every second until I clicked,
apparently working a lot like xwd in a loop. I did not get 10 frames per
second, I got 1 frame per second (at best). Not really what I want.

Can it record video / multiple frames per second? Do you have an example
command line?

No, that's not what I'm looking for. I want to record from the X11
display, not some other video source on the system.

Sorry. So far I only used to to take single screenshots, using basic
syntax, then point and click.

Speaking for people-who-acomplished-something:

(1) Example from Excelent Documentation(TM) of avconv (or is it ffmpeg
again?  I'm trully lost here), grabbing on -s cif produces something.
Grabbing on -s 1680x1050 produces whooping 7 fps material with 983
duplicates over 40sec video.

(2) You should look for examples in Excelent Documentation(TM) of ffmpeg
on-site -- IIRC example of X11 grrabbing was there for years.  Can't say
if it was a working example back then.

(3) Quick swipe through Excelent Documentation(TM) of mplayer/mencoder
suggests vain -- the thing just doesn't do it.

p.s.  "on-site" means "installed", cut off interwebs.

I tried this one. It does require you to specify the desktop area; a bit of 
a drag.

Last time I had to record my own screen, I used recordmydesktop and, as
far as I recall, it went quite well. It converts the recorded video to
Ogg Theora.

It seems to adjust the frame rate according to what changes in the
screen, so it may be a problem if you need something with a fixed
framerate, but I think it may be a good idea otherwise (as it won't use
more frames than needed).

According to my distro's package manager, recordmydesktop is available
from http://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net/about.php

While the website mentions frontends, I've never tried them, my
experience has been with the commandline tool (recordmydesktop
filename.ogv, Ctrl+C to terminate the capture (and start the encoding))

I found that easily with my package manager and tried the command line
from the man page (why -- and - mixed? why no short version for width or
height? Who knows?):

    recordmydesktop --width $wide 
	    --height $height \
	    -x $upper_left_x -y $upper_left_y \
	    -o foo.ogv

And it worked perfectly. In a thirty second test, it caught mouse
pointer changes in addition to other changes, and recorded at about
18 FPS. That's just fine.

I see from the manpage there is a --fps switch and a --follow-mouse
option that looks interesting. 

And:

   The following NEW packages will be installed:
     recordmydesktop
   0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 21 not upgraded.
   Need to get 58.0 kB of archives.
   After this operation, 160 kB of additional disk space will be used.

At a mere 160kB, it's about 100 x smaller than the ffmpeg I downloaded
yesterday.
