Recently it was on the news a guy that was having a walk in the
countryside, a nurse. Somehow he fell or something, and his walking
stick got stuck on his belly, not the centre, but the side. Instead of
phoning rescue, he walked down, some 17 km, for fear of being ripped out
by the cost of rescue.

Amazing.

It sounds like you're referring to this story:

https://notthebee.com/article/american-man-hikes-10-miles-down-mountain-with-pole-through-side-to-avoid-pricey-medical-bill

It wasn't an ordinary ambulance ride he was avoiding:

As a nurse, he is likely aware that
     being airlifted to an emergency
     room would be a $20,000-$50,000
     bill.

Since he wasn't losing much blood,
he decided to hike down and drive
     himself to the hospital.

     ...

After determining that he had not
punctured a lung or another organ,
     David's friends Brad and Jess
helped him get down Granite Peak
and they called search and rescue
     on their sat phone.

Is helicopter rescue "free" in countries with socialized
medicine?

I'll ask chatGPT because I'm not sure. I only know about Spain, and yes,
it is usually gratis if the emergency is true and not caused by
negligence (like being stranded in a snow storm without having snow
clothes and some food).

Q: Is helicopter rescue free in the European Union? Say, somebody
impaled with a walking stick up in a mountain.

A: No. There is **no European Union-wide rule** that makes helicopter
mountain rescue free or paid. Each country—and sometimes each region—has
its own rules. The EU regulates aviation safety, but not who pays for
rescue. ([Eur-Lex][1])

For your example—someone is impaled by a walking stick while hiking high
in the mountains—the priority is to call the emergency services
immediately. Whether a helicopter is dispatched depends on medical need,
terrain, weather, and availability, not on the person's ability to pay.

The billing varies considerably:

* **France:** Mountain rescue outside ski resorts is generally funded by
the state, so the casualty is usually not billed. ([Reddit][2])
* **Austria:** Air rescue after leisure mountain accidents may result in
substantial bills (often thousands of euros), although medical insurance
may cover part of the cost depending on the circumstances.
([europakonsument.at][3])
* **Switzerland** (not in the EU): Rescue is commonly chargeable unless
covered by insurance or membership in a rescue organization.
([Wikipedia][4])
* **Italy:** Rules vary by region. Serious medical emergencies may be
covered, but rescues resulting from unnecessary risk-taking, being
stranded without injury, or ignoring trail closures can lead to
significant charges. Recent cases have involved bills of many thousands
of euros. ([The Guardian][5])
* **Spain:** Policies differ by autonomous community. Many genuine
emergency rescues are publicly funded, but some regions can recover
costs in cases of negligence or prohibited activities. ([El País][6])

For hikers and climbers, it's common to carry travel insurance or join
an alpine club that includes mountain rescue coverage. The annual cost
is often far less than a single helicopter rescue.

So if someone is **seriously injured**—for example, impaled and unable
to be evacuated safely on foot—the rescue service will generally
dispatch whatever resources are appropriate. The question of payment is
dealt with afterward, and the answer depends entirely on where the
accident occurred and the local rules.

Good idea.

> Is helicopter rescue "free" in countries with socialized medicine?

When I lived in New Hampshire you could register if you were hiking in the
back country. iirc there was a $5 or $10 fee, but it was strictly
voluntary. The understanding was if you chose not to register and had a
problem you should call someone who cared.

I knew a guy who was on a S&R team. He had done Granite twice, once with a
rope and once without. He said he'd never do it without a rope again. It's
the highest peak in MT at 12,807' and definitely out of my league.

I'm going to assume David and his friends weren't amateurs.

I just checked at CM (one of our sick funds in Belgium). In case of
urgent transport with a helicopter they will pay back half of what is
charged.

You need to be a member of a sick fund. CM charges 9,99 euro/month. You
can also pay for a hospital insurance (which is advised) for which they
charge 4,46 euro/month or more. Depends on your age and on which
insurance plan. Sick funds usually have a basic plan (which is good) and
another plan which offers more than the basic plan.

What they can charge per kilometre is fixed by law:

- 80,97 euro for the first 10 km;
- 8,08 euro starting at 11 km;
- 6,18 euro starting at 21 km.

Mind you, this is /urgent/ (medical) transport. I'm not sure about a
/rescue/.

When abroad there's an insurance like Europ Assistance:

Yes. And even if its not totally free.

I think my sister was pulled off Table Mountain by one when she went A
over T and puncture a lung and shattered her clavicle.

Most of what she paid for was post operative therapy,. The insurance
covered all operations.

I think the helicopter was free as was the emergency hospital that
pulled the ribs out of her lungs.

All black and Indian staff and bloody good they were too...

I miss Africa...

Here in Australia it's separate from free public healthcare (which
might not turn out to be available or completely free either, but
that's a different story). Here in the state of Victoria I choose
to pay for an ambulance subscription, and get a carboard card that
I believe gets me out of paying thousands in the event of needing
ambulance or helicopter transport. At least it worked for me once.
I think it covers me interstate, but ambulance services run by
other states may have different arrangements.

Yeah. The 'flying doctors' were big in the outback back in the day

in the UK the air ambulance is pretty much free.
I met a guy in the cardiac ward who had had a heart attack on a trains
station platform, was given first line by a paramedic who just happened
to be there, was air ambulanced to one hospital where he died several
times, air ambulanced to IIRC Cambridge where he had an operation, and
woke up in the intensive care unit in my local hospital two weeks later...

They had given him a 5% chance of survival....probably the air ambulance
saved his life

In the UK the very best medical care is not always available, but when
it is, it is always free.

I wouldn't say it is the best system in the world, but at an estimated
socialised cost of £1500 per year per citizen, it's a damn sight cheaper
than US private health insurance.

In the end there is a simple difference in basic philosophy.

socialised health care goes back in the UK to the realisation that
disease was not restricted to poor people, and they could easily make
rich people sick, and cost rich people money when they were.

So things like proper sewage and clean drinking water and some sort of
basic community hospitals were already in play when the NHS was formed.
I believe the medical professions hated it. No more big incomes.

But it stuck.

And the idea that *some* basic socialism was probably better than having
rat infested shitholes, roads only available to those who could pay,
workers who couldn't read or do sums, was accepted as the norm, in a way
it never has been in the US

And rightly or wrongly that has been extended with some success to e.g.
the fierce regulation of public monopolies like railways, electrical
grids, broadband and so on.

To the extent that over regulation is now a distinct problem

It's worse than usual on AliExpress.

If you have time to do them for all of the different sellers in
your search results to work out which is _actually_ cheapest.

Last time I had an order from AliExpress that never arrived, after
a month and a half I went on to claim a refund. "Wait longer".
Huff, OK. So I waited longer, half-forgetting about it, then next
time I was on their site I tried again and it said something like
"sorry, the window for claims has expired". So I got done by them
there (I could have next tried raising a claim via PayPal but it
wasn't worth the time).

I'm talking about delivery from China to Australia, not the USA.

Well those points could be applied to Aus too actually. That said
I'm sure I've seen overhead wires along UK streets on TV (they're
always getting in the way on Grand Designs). Utes with leaf springs
are valid if you carry heavy loads, though unfortunately
American-style "trucks" that are all show and don't actually have
much tray space to take a big load seem to have come into fashion
here now.

Maybe not so bad here yet on those counts.

Aussies are in fact quite international.
I had an Anaesthetist who seemed to be Filipino with a strong Australian
accent. Very good she was. But I had mere seconds to talk before there I
was, gone...

Trouble is the ladies all went towards man hating and I wouldn't really
want to know any.

The Canakit link shows the bare board as sold out.

https://www.amazon.com/SANOOV-Raspberry-Aluminum-Heatsink-HDMI-USB/dp/
B0FX3SCP5F

$78 with a heat sink and a couple of adapters. The price history graph
isn't the greatest but it looks like about $30 in March. Then it took off,
gaining $14 in the last 30 days.

If you go to DigiKey's site you'll find there are 0 in stock. There is a
'check lead time' option that says they will be available 6/7/2027.

I've seen this in the early '80s when lead times were a year or more.
Before starting a design you researched what you could buy. Motorola was
particularly bad as they responded to increased demand in the automotive
industry as cars became more sophisticated.

The Amazon pricing probably reflects a vendor who has stock on hand and is
gouging for all they're worth, or should I say responding to the law of
supply and demand.

The problem is if Part B is designed in because of temporary shortage of
Part A, there is little future incentive to go back to Part A.

I did, but the locator site said they had stock yesterday, not sure if
they actually did or not? I did manage to buy a zero a couple of weeks
ago within the UK (both non-W and 2W were available at that time, I
specifically didn't want a 2W)

If you look at the feedback of the marketplace supplier, there 1 star
reviews from people calling them cunts, so I'd probably avoid ...

As someone mentioned maybe Ukraine and/or Russia are buying them up?

USA has NO real equivs to the PI line.

   Maybe should, but doesn't.

The current trade wars/adjustments ... things
like PIs just got SCREWED. Short supplies,
   inflated prices.

It WILL get better, but not THIS year.

   Oh, price MEMORY - SDs/M.2/etc - almost
the ENTIRE world production has been
shifted towards the "AI" market. For
   Joe Consumer - NADA !

They were screwed a couple of years ago (pandemic) and had got back to
normalish, now AI sucking up RAM and flash production.

Personally I think the Pi5 has got too big for its boots.

My hope is that big-AI realises it's not making profits and gives up, no
doubt a second wave would step-in thinking they could do better ...
