Googling linux brother "simple-scan" gets hits suggesting users are having similar problems with that package. Sane says brother scanners are "unsupported", but the above brother.com url lets you download drivers that they say will get the sane stuff working. But I'll give that simple-scan package a try if I can't get Brother's documented procedures working after a little more twiddling.
