FYI. I also tried it in Gnome. Same results (no permission to write and 
it shows root can do that). I also noticed these in both KDE and Gnome 
when mounted:

$ ls -all /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 2, 0 Dec 30 12:13 /dev/fd0

/media/floppy0:
total 11
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 7168 Dec 31  1969 .
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Dec 31 17:21 ..

I even tried kfloppy on this unmounted drive. It won't let me even 
format with an internal error -- device not correctly defined. :/

Also, is it normal for the drive's light stay on even after unmounting 
before ejecting the disk? I don't remember it doing that before in both 
MS OSes (Windows and DOS). Maybe this old drive is broken? Ejecting the 
disk would make its light stop. In fact, I don't remember having to 
unmount and mount for 3.5" disks back in those days in MS OSes. Must be 
a Linux/UNIX thing?

Edit the fstab line and add the option "uid={your_numeric_uid}" or
"umask=0" to open the permissions up for everybody.  The mounter in
KDE or Gnome is using root privileges to get the mount done, so the
default is that everything ends up owned by root

So, it would be "/dev/fd0        /media/floppy0  auto    rw,user,noauto,umask=0		0       0"? 
I am double checking before I mess this up. ;)
