If it is a voltage issue seems odd to have bad luck with both the PC and the hub. If not firmware perhaps UDEV, it seems not to be giving correct permissions to the device via /dev/bus/???/??? but then root is having no more luck with scanimage -L. I'mm going to look through my bit box to see if I have any spare PCI/usb cards to see if that affects anything. Not sure whether I have any spare or whether new PC as any standard PCI slots!

Canon would only work when directly connected to the USB socket in my laptop but not via hub- On my desk top had 3 types of USB - front ones I have always found to be unreliable so do not use them, the back ones that are inbuilt have limited power. The best ones are from an ISA card and they seem to be the ones that have the most power. I also saw a powered Hub on a web site for £20.
