I ran smartctl's long test and waited about an hour.

I got this e-mail in the beginning of the test:

Date: Sat, 19 Apr 2014 09:55:41 -0700
From: root <root@MyLinuxBox>
To: root@MyLinuxBox
Subject: SMART error (SelfTest) detected on host: MyLinuxBox

This email was generated by the smartd daemon running on:

    host name: MyLinuxBox
   DNS domain: [Unknown]
   NIS domain: (none)

The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:

Device: /dev/sda [SAT], Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1

For details see host's SYSLOG.

You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
Another email message will be sent in 24 hours if the problem persists.

Oops, I used the wrong parameter to show smartctl results. I also ran
GSmartControl v0.8.6 for its GUI, so I could watch its ETAs and
percentage in real-time. 2/Two more short tests passed twice so far.
2/Two more long tests failed. It looks like it only got to 40% of the
long tests done? Here are the latest results:

Really? Hmm. I will keep my compound eyes on it then. I wonder if
Linux/Debian will keep notifying about them daily like this morning.
Today was the (fir/1)st day. FYI on the latest results:

How come it can't complete the long tests though? It only gets about 40%
done and then fails. Isn't that a bad sign?

Yeah, a few reallocated sectors are no big deal on a drive
that old. Some of those older drives don't handle mains
failure that well and can produce a bad sector that way
and then just reallocate that bad sector.

Dunno, I don't use that much so can't say about that.

That's the same as what you posted yesterday
on the most important bad sector data.

Dunno.

I don't test drives like that, just watch the
bad sector numbers to see if they change.

Interesting. I did not know that.

OK. So, I am just looking at "6" value to rise to be concerned.

That is what concerns me. If it can't finish it, then something is going
bad?

That test stops on the first error and will continue to fail until that
pending sector is reallocated, and that is not going to happen until
there is a WRITE operation to that sector. The steps for finding a bad
sector and writing to it are at

    http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/badblockhowto.html

That is a fairly lengthy HOWTO, but it deals with several different
scenarios, and you will be concerned with only a small part of it.

Thanks. FYI, I haven't gotten any new e-mail notifications about this
drive a day later. That's good so far! :)

I noticed this doesn't mention EXT4, but then the document hasn't been
updated since 1/23/2007. Are these instructions still valid and safe for
EXT4?

All it depends on is a version of debugfs that is compatible with the
filesystem, and that's just to identify the file (if any) that is
currently using the bad sector. Note that the "LBA_of_first_error"
reported by the offline test may not be precise. It could be just
the start of a block that contained the bad sector. You can use
"hdparm --read-sector ..." to try to pin that down.

# debugfs -V
debugfs 1.42.5 (29-Jul-2012)
         Using EXT2FS Library version 1.42.5

That looks kind of old? Hmm. I hope Debian stable gives me the correct
version for all of its disk utility packages to be compatible when I
need to run it. So far, I haven't gotten any new SMART e-mails about new
issues. Original e-mail said it was supposed to be daily? I guess, it is
stable for now?

Although, I noticed smartctl's Reallocated_Sector_Ct went from 6 to 7
when I checked the old HDD's SMART datas. Is that going up too fast
within two/2 days, Rod? See below for the latest smartctl results:

Apparently it is only the previously pending unreadable sector which
eventually got reallocated, so no new error.

Oh. So, how should I be reading its results to see if it is getting
worse quickly or not? I am confused.

That one isnt getting worse, just the detail has changed, the
sector has been reallocated, because something wrote to it.

> I am confused.

The drive is still fine for a drive that old.

Because the offline uncorrectable was
written to and became a reallocated sector.

The pending sector turned out to be fine.

Yes, see above for what happened.

Interesting that the read failures are still there and that
blows a great hole in Bob Nichols' claim that the test just
stopped when it got to the offline uncorrectable sector.

Weird. I guess my brief usage of that HDD (VirtualBox's updated Windows
XP Pro. SP3 VM) yesterday caused that.

Hmm, I decided to run both short and long self tests again via gsmartctl
to see if the long test passed this time. Here are the latest results:

That was interesting to see automatic reallocation made the tests work
again. I guess I should use the disk again if I see reallocation issues
again?

There's no "great hole" in my theory, Rod. You were looking at the
history of tests that were run _before_ the bad sector was reallocated.
It's a bit hard to see that, as the "hours" numbers in the self-test
log are apparently recorded as 16-bit numbers and you have to add
65536 to the recent ones to get values that align with the
Power_On_Hours in the SMART attributes table.

Dunno, his original list, which still had the offline uncorrectable
showing, had got quite a few extended tests that had completed
without error, and your story about why the extended tests did
sometimes abort with a read error doesn’t explain why those didn’t.

Still doesn’t explain the above unless I am having a massive brain fart.
