My problem: I cannot boot a liveDVD (or any other bootable DVD) from
my Sony Vaio P4 box, despite it having a both a DVD and CD-ROM player
and with the AwardBIOS 2.3 configed to boot from the DVD player. Why?
Live and bootable CDs boot, no problem, from either disc player. But,
DVDs, nada. It's not the DVDs, which are burned from .iso via K3B.
Not even factory burned DVDs will boot.
Settings on Award boot for this drive are:
Secondary Master DW-U12A
Type Auto
PIO Mode 4
UltraDMA Mode 2

I see the BIOS capabilities include "cdboot" and "bootselect", but no
DVD boot. Is that the issue? This both a Sony box and a Sony DVD
ATAPI player. I realize Sony is notorious for their DMR hardware, but

boot from the DVD? I see no option to "bootselect" anywhere. I'm
runnning Slackware 14.1.

This computer isn't new, but I noticed it has a separate keys to get into bios and to set the boot order or whatever. I cant' remember if the bios allows the boot order setting or not. But the bios screen says something about "press this for bios, press that for bootselect". So maybe look more carefully. When I had problems, I'd use the smartboot manager that used to (and maybe still) comes with Slackware. I think you can run that from a USB flash drive, and surely the instructions for that are now there if it can. So that is booted (assuming you set the boot device to be the USB flash drive) and a little program runs that lets you select what to boot from. Michael

I tried to install my version of PCLOS onto a big Dell with i5 and it would not use my distro but the PCLOS Full Monty with a lot of eye candy(6 Virtual Desktops with a theme for each) worked. No idea why. A week later I might have tried to fit it with Fedora 20 but at least I have a vague idea of how to advise my friend with the Dell to deal with things he hasn't learned yet. bliss

I run MATE on my computer, LXDE on my wife's netbook. I ran PCLOS KDE for many years, but always was a fan of their old GNOME version, very cool black and silver screen.

What I installed the Dell with the i5 was Full Monty of the same vintage. I used Gnome 2.3 on Mandriva for a couple of weeks or so then dissatisfied with some of the tools I went back to KDE. My own Virtual Desktops feature an enlarged photo of a flower that a friend took. On the Full Monty install I loaded one desktop with CodePoets Dream which is provided with all the installs in KDE just to show the new user it can be done. Currently I am using KDE 4.12.3 under kernel 3.4.70-psclos1. bliss

SOmetimes it seems like some options don't appear unless the hardware is there. But I assume this is a desktop? So both drives should be there. Michael

Both have DVDs, both have a BIOS that lists the DVD players, and both allow the DVD to be listed and be first boot device, which I've done on both, several times. Nada! I've never been able to boot a DVD from either one. Even installing Slack requires I use the CDs. I may try the "disconnect CD player" suggestion. nb

Not just with DVDs but CDs including Windows 7 install disks. bliss

I thought you meant something old wouldn't boot from DVD, when you're saying age isn't the factor. I still find that hard to believe, since one can boot from some machines from DVD after a certain age, I don't see why some wouldn't. Michael

I have machines from 1999 that will boot from DVD. That does not mean all from that era or even much later, could do so. Now, it may also be that his system is not set up properly. We really cannot tell. >

If this is not a SATA DVD,
You may be able to work around this problem by chainloading
the Plop Bootmanager from your existing bootloader, then
boot the DVD from Plop BM.
Instructions to do so follow below. Choose instructions
for the particular boot loader you are using.

5. LILO
Download the current boot manager plpbt-5.0.14.zip.

Extract it to get the boot manager binary program plpbt.bin.

Copy the plpbt.bin file to /boot.
Add to your /etc/lilo.conf the following
image=/boot/plpbt.bin
label=Plop
Run lilo to update lilo.
You can configure the file plpbt.bin with plpcfgbt.
