I'm trying to install Linux on a new HP box that has UEFI instead of BIOS. 
First I tried Scientific Linux 6.2 (which is the distro I really need to 
run on the box) but it doesn't have any support for UEFI in it's 
partitioner. I then tried Fedora 16 and then Fedora 17 Beta. The closest 
that I've come is getting to the GRUB command line, on most of the 
installs the box doesn't see any bootable devices. Is there any distro 
that works with UEFI?

Nonsense.

1) Fedora uses GRUB2, not grub legacy
2) Fedora defaults on GPT, not mbr.

This is true at least since 2011.

That's it. I used gparted from a Fedora Live USB stick and replaced the 
partition table with a standard DOS partition table. Once I had the new 
table I was able to install SL6.2 without having to waste a partition on 
Ubuntu.

Since SL is a RHEL clone and that has support for installing on UEFI systems I'd
be quite surprised to find it had been removed. CentOS 6.2 definitely has 
support but I doubt if many people have tested any of them.

None of the Redhat's work, not even the beta of Fedora 17. Ubuntu 12.4 had 
no trouble. I installed Ubuntu on one partition and SL6.2 on another. 
Booting into Ubuntu and running update-gconf put the SL6.2 kernel into the 
Ubuntu boot menu. This is a kludge but it works.

	Have you read Philo's referenced note and checked the
article at the URL?  It seems quite helpful.
	Converting the file system and the MBR to MS-DOS standards,
and installing Windows from an ISO moved to a Flash drive.  A
change to make to the UEFI settings.

	Read that short article before giving up on
the usual stuff.

Converting the partition table sounds like the right idea, I just wish I'd 
seen that suggestion at the start of the weekend, I blew a whole day 
trying to install Linux on the box. Now I that have it working, I'm 
reluctant to start over just in case the HP doesn't support booting from a 
DOS partition table. BTW this isn't my box, I always build mine from known 
good components. My business partner bought it because it seemed like a 
good deal, but it's not. Not only does it use UEFI, but it has a crap 
RALINK wireless chipset that doesn't even work in Ununtu 12.4 let alone 
Scientific Linux, but it also has a crap ATI graphics card which doesn't 
have binary drivers yet and has terrible kernel drivers. 

On a related note, is there a way to get Grub2 to chainload to Grub 
instead of just adding kernels to it's boot list? The main problem with my 
setup is that if I do a kernel update on Scientific Linux the boot list 
won't see it unless I boot into Ubuntu and run update-grub.

I successfully installed Debian-stable from a USB "live" stick on a UEFI 
machine with no CD drive (laptop).  Wiped out the Windows installation, 
repartitioned with the standard ext3, etc.  I had expected problems on 
this laptop, particularly with the touchpad.  Ubuntu (newer than debian 
stable) failed to handle the touchpad,a royal PITA.  The LVM disk 
partitioning with debian failed on installing grub and lilo as well 
(though I'm new to that, maybe that would have been possible with greater 
knowledge/effort).  I'm happy, I've got Debian on all my machines, just 
didn't expect the "old" debian to work as well on such a new machine.

CentOS 6.2 Final works with UEFI but you need to make sure that you go into the bios setup and select as the boot device the UEFI version of the install or you will be booting legacy mode.
