Converting the partition table sounds like the right idea, I just wish I'd 
seen that suggestion at the start of the weekend, I blew a whole day 
trying to install Linux on the box. Now I that have it working, I'm 
reluctant to start over just in case the HP doesn't support booting from a 
DOS partition table. BTW this isn't my box, I always build mine from known 
good components. My business partner bought it because it seemed like a 
good deal, but it's not. Not only does it use UEFI, but it has a crap 
RALINK wireless chipset that doesn't even work in Ununtu 12.4 let alone 
Scientific Linux, but it also has a crap ATI graphics card which doesn't 
have binary drivers yet and has terrible kernel drivers. 

On a related note, is there a way to get Grub2 to chainload to Grub 
instead of just adding kernels to it's boot list? The main problem with my 
setup is that if I do a kernel update on Scientific Linux the boot list 
won't see it unless I boot into Ubuntu and run update-grub.
