Hello!

In my very old upgraded Debian Wheezy/stable box, I can read my old 
school 3.5" floppy disk(ette)s but it can't write. From what I searched 
online, I need to do some hacking with my configurations files like 
/etc/fstab. KDE v4.14.2's Dolphin automounts and shows me the data in it 
but doesn't let me delete, format, and other write activities. With 
sudo, I can erase files but not write like:
$ sudo echo > test
-bash: test: Permission denied

$ df

I don't know if those are correct or not. What am I missing? Thank you

Interesting. So I should use su first then. People told me using "su" is 
bad and to use "sudo".

No. I think he's suggesting you're expected to learn how to use sudo so 
you don't get bitten. As soon as you start doing anything with root 
privileges you need to be sure you are wearing your best "clue" hat. 
Else hilarity will ensue as you try to fix the damage.

turned into a root file.  Then you may have problems with
accessing your usual programs as a user.

That's interesting, what does this "-a" do? My shadow-utils 4.2 su
doesn't know that option (Debian login 1:4.2-3) -- is it a new thing?
(My BSD su doesn't either, but over there I use doas anyway.)

But, yeah, one of the last things I do as root sometimes is a chown.

	I was wrong.  I simply mistyped then someone pointed
out my errors and I rechecked.  invoke su with a space and
a hyphen, "su -".

Yes even with multiple disks in case there was a bad one since they're 
all old.

Surely anything that reuqires _writing_ to floppy disks is a mistake by
now.  Get your files off them and then dispose of them.

I agree.

About a year ago I needed to actually find a few working floppies and 
about 90% of the ones I had in storage were bad.

some years ago I was looking for a solution to long term archival of data.

In the end the only thing I felt would actually work, was a very large 
pair of disks, one an exact copy of anything important on the other.

as one disk dies, it is replaced and re-synchronised. Rsync is wonderful 
with cron..

Best of all, I dont have to find te right DVD/tape/floppy. The data is 
online there if I need it

Yep, and multiple 3.5" disks in case I had bad disks since they are 
decades old.

I am thinking this might be an ownership problem.  However, I am
not sure if the same ownership rules apply to floppies like they
do with hard drives.  I would assume they do but I could be wrong.
Anyway, I would suggest to try this with a floppy you don't mind
ruining.

To take ownership of the floppy, enter these commands in this
order into a terminal window.  Change 'yourname' to your user
name in the chown command...

sudo umount /media/floppy0
sudo mount -a
sudo chown user:yourname /media/floppy0
sudo chmod -R 755 /media/floppy0
