This timing seems/appears to be related to my earlier reboot (did not
power off) of this very old 2005's Debian box due its yesterday's Kernel
v2.6.32-5-686 upgrade (not version, just its package with fixes). I had
no problems with the reboot (but wasn't looking at its screen though).

So I decided to run gsmartcontrol v5.41 (GUI version of smartctl) and it
also marked Power_On_Hours as a problem. I ran a long test and it
started with loud noises (a fan/motor or something spinning?) for about
30 seconds. That doesn't sound good to me. Anyways, here is the report
after the long test which said no errors/problems:

Yes. Other attributes look good, even after 64880 hours (7+ years)
uptime :-)
Many recent drives return threshold 0 for Power_On_Hours and all other
usage ("Old_age") attributes which means that these would never "fail".

:( So, I will tell it to stop telling me about it then.
Do I just add "/dev/sdb -i 9" line (without quotation marks) to the
bottom of my /etc/smartd.conf file? I am not sure if that is correct or
not. :)

Hmm, that didn't work and I just got another e-mail about it. Here's

Ah, so I have to specify each HDD to do that. I was hoping there was a
way to set it for ALL and ANY HDDs connected to the PC.

Actually it is the result of the flooding of Thailand as far as I know. The prices are up because the dealers want to make as much as the customer will pay. And it may be a while until the Thai operations are up and making the stuff again. bliss

At this point I don't think anyone knows when manufacturing will return to "normal", but if it is a prolonged outage, there will be a huge drop in supply. The supply/demand equation does require an increase in prices. In business, you MUST charge what is called "replacement prices", i.e., a price that is profitable at the replacement cost of the product. Retailers (probably with actual knowledge) must sell at a price that allows them enough profit so they can AFFORD to buy replacement stocks. If they sell at the old replacement price, they can't afford to fill their shelves. They will spiral into bankruptcy. I see this all the time with gasoline, an industry I do have real world knowledge of. If gas suddenly spikes (say, the nutjobs in Iran close the Straits of Hormuz to Saudi, Kuwaiti and Iraqi oil tankers) and a gas station doesn't immediately raise retail prices, they won't make enough money on existing stocks to pay for the next 7.9K gal (or 9.0 if triple axle) tanker truck from the pipeline terminal. So they can only buy 1/2 or 3/4 of a tanker, price goes up more, but they only charge $.10 over their actual cost like normal, and they don't make enough on this partial tanker to buy exact replacement volume. Lather, rinse, repeat. Their underground tanks will be empty in a few days, and the business will go under. Education in free market macro economics sucks. Most teachers, even in most universities, don't have a clue how a real free market works...
