We can't > discard those realities no matter how much we might hate the company. The GUI used by pretty much every major desktop distro has the features Apple innovated with the Lisa and Mac, and many of the things innovated by NeXT as well. Here is just a partial list: * Double clicking * Trash can (or the like) * Graying out inactive items * Checkmarks next to menu items * Keyboard shortcuts for menu items * Drag and drop * Full file system in GUI (as icons) * GUI based hierarchical folder structure * Editing documents with direct mouse manipulation * The clipboard (and later one with multiple versions of the same data so you can paste plain text or formatted text, etc.) * Control panel to set system settings * Pull down menus * Desktop accessories (now known as widgets or gadgets) * Meta-data associations with icons (data about the data being associated with the file) * Self-redrawing windows (at Apple) and later windows where the image was still held in memory even when not visible, making the redraw be instantaneous from the perspective of a user (called double buffering and done at NeXT) * X to close a window (this is from NeXT - I was surprised by that) Even MS has added some: * Contextual (right click) menus * Drag indicators (to show copying, moving, making a shortcut / alias) * The Start button So what has Linux added? Virtual desktops existed elsewhere before Linux even existed... so what innovations have we seen there? It is a great playground of ideas -- one of its big advantages -- but what has it added? -- Personal attacks from those who troll show their own insecurity. In truth I can not indict Staci Elliot for for his rants but, in the end, I don't grasp why he writes here after all this nonsense. Staci Elliot is hoping for dialog as experienced in a technical venue and unmoderated environments just are not it. Rambling cretin. How is Blender on Linux doing anything above the lowest common denominator? Flatfish is far too stupid to write a SC script. The only scripting he's capable of doing is automating his trolling in this group. I think the point is not 100% to get people to listen to him. The point is likely to piss me off for trolling outside groups he knows I frequent. He upsets an entire group of people who are just bystanders, but that's a conceited fool for you. What others care about isn't a factor. Technologies change. Maybe the ubiquity of a website is getting past its prime. -- Get Rich Slow http://www.5z8.info/--INITIATE-CREDIT-CARD-XFER--_k7s1jt_inject_worm http://tmp.gallopinginsanity.com/BilkHelp.html Jonas Eklundh Communication AB

I'm not sure why file extensions would be so scary to people either way. The concept of a file _type_ shouldn't have to be so foreign to people as it is clear that there is a difference, for instance, between an audio file and a image. It just makes sense that an extension would exist to help an operating system determine how to load a particular file. I know that Linux doesn't require one, but that granted it just seems logical to put an extension even then. >> but they also know that with it being ~80% of the >> market, they get the most number of customers & exposure in that OS. >> > >Then why GNU/Linux ports of Mathematica, Matlab, Maple, and >many other packages? > >There are universal and official standards that all software >should/must address. Idiot. Oh, so you're claiming that its also been regularly UNIX(tm) certified? Or did you have something else in mind that's an objective measure instead of just making YA stupidly unsubstantiated claim? > >LO? Android? Firefox? GCC? KDE? > > > >Not so small, after all. > > Note: No response. Note: chrisv never did respond to the MS-Office clone flaw that I'd experienced, although I can't recall if that was OO or LO. So I don't really know if I should bother to point out that his attempted counterpoint is weak: Android exists only because of Google's deep pockets and their own self-serving corporate interests. Frankly, there's no good reason for Android to have been built on Linux other than it was "good enough" with some of what they needed when they were on stuck with an aggressive delivery schedule. Firefox ... yeah, its been a pretty good browser. Does it shine though? Their product's business model relies on selling eyeballs via its default search engine to a company who relies on advertising, so they're in it for the money too. GCC relies on the FSF, which has a pretty small (~$1M/yr) budget to support all of its initiatives. The KDE has a charity style support model and a cadre of non-CMMI volunteers. Neither of which highlight anything whose processes are inherent to delivering superior quality code/products. As such, the point stands. -hh

Linux ( the kernel, not distros ) also gets plenty of funding. Profit aside, Apple can't invest, not like Samsung or Amazon. Samsung is the most popular smartphone manufacturer April 2018; 39% of activations; Apple got 31%, down from 40%, last quarter. I thought they stopped in 2014 (a lot has happened to FF since then) when they went with the Yahoo deal?
