You claiming that MacOS is not Unix is not “pointing it out”.

The fact that MacOS IS Unix has been proven to you multiple times. Right
here in this thread. Will you admit you are wrong? Or will you run away
again?

I like Lawrence, but he needs to move on from the idea that Linux and
open-source provides a superior experience to Apple and MacOS. People
have eyes and ears, and none of those people with vision and hearing
have looked at Linux and said "this is what I want."

It's possible to use Linux extremely well. But I would argue that
macOS's experience with Unix applications is quite good.

It is, but Linux experts are themselves constantly fixing their
installations and then lying to you and saying that there is never a
need for them to do so. It's just boring at this point. I've waited for
the operating system to make progress for decades and while it is
decent, it's just never going to be on the level of MacOS. Heck, even
Windows is less of a hassle than Linux is.

> But I would argue that

It's stellar. You have just enough UNIX as you would need, but the rest
of it is a polished operating system that works the way the human mind
does. It takes a little bit of getting used to coming from Windows, but
a person who has never used a computer in their life is a lot more
likely to learn MacOS properly than either Windows or Linux because it
makes sense.

There are human minds which like Apple and it may be that this is going
to be a hell of a lot more significant than people realized. Because
Microsoft has big ground to potentially lose. I think the
gaming/graphical support will be both macOS-centric and
emulation-of-Windows-centric, depending what one is doing, there's a way
for Apple to exploit its success in laptops to the Nth degree if they
really conceive of the product line it would take, and why couldn't they
accomplish this?

I have never used macOS but I have used AIX which is a certified UNIX V&
and UNIX 03 OS. I prefer Linux.

Nothing wrong with that.

But most people have a different preference.

The first led to the second. That's all I will say. Without that
experience with UNIX, you probably wouldn't be as forgiving of Linux's
mediocrity.

I think the only mediocrity involved is your inability to maintain a Linux

I booted and updated mine, today. It seems to have cost me using my TV
as a second monitor, swapping all the cables, but my TV doesn't need the
connection really. I can't get back into Linux mindset. It's just not
as good an experience, no way to save that.

We both tried (me probably for much longer than you) and gave up. We're
both tired of fighting with our operating system and acting like the
dated, clunky experience we're given is somehow better than the
competition. The filesystems are better than NTFS, I'll give them that
much, but they're not better than APFS in any significant way. The
desktop experience is also not more elegant than MacOS or noticeably
faster than Windows (the latter might appear clunky, but it still loads
and responds as quickly on the same hardware). It's definitely more
private than Windows and MacOS are, but what does it matter when we
learn that all of us are being surveilled regardless of what operating
system we run?

I used Linux between 2019-2021 and 2023-2026, but have gotten over the
fascination with it and have appreciated Win11 more.

I didn't have that experience with Linux, I just don't want the lesser
experience more broadly.

I can definitely say that only Larry is secure in using an OS, since he
builds such a broken system, there's no place for the backdoor, but
definitely Linux distros have them much like Windows.

As everyone knows, I've used Linux on and off since the late 90s. It has
never been a long-term system for me, even when I had no hardware
whatsoever and purposely bought a desktop for the purpose of using
Ubuntu Linux when it had its first release. Even then, I returned to
Windows. However, while Windows was my main system, I'll be the first to
admit that its original install almost never stayed on my computer.
There was always a reason to reinstall. MacOS is the only operating
system I've never needed to reinstall.

Indeed. I subscribe to a bunch of RSS feeds which monitor such things
for all operating systems. Linux is definitely not looking as safe as it
used to, but the security problems that emerge always seem to be patched
by the time the news about them is released.

I should care more about Linux, but looking at it again reminded me of
why I don't. It's just not up to speed on the desktop.

I'm literally talking about the distro producers (and likely the
NSA/etc.) having a planned backdoor, like M$ does in Windows.

There is nothing to know. Gnome is for the masses, KDE is for those who
like Windows but wants lots of customization, X is for those who want a
leaner desktop and something like Hyprland is for those, presumably, who
do a lot of programming.

Linux doesn't need to have backdoors because the hardware it runs on
already does. It doesn't matter what operating system you use: if they
want to monitor your activity, they can.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SELinux

Both my Fedora and SUSE Tumbleweed machines use SELinux. CGNAT may or may
not add a little security.

I know you won't understand this...

If booting a Linux machine required us to turn a crank for two minutes,
a lot of Linux advocates would be telling us that it is superior to
simply opening the lid and watching the machine turn on on its own. We'd
be mocked for being too weak or lazy to do such a thing.

On a related note, I remember some one—I think it was Joel—telling me
that the iOS method of app switching / returning to the homescreen was
clearly inferior to Android "always visible" buttons on the bottom of
the screen.

Ridiculous I know to claim that this was somehow too difficult for
people to learn.

But what I've recently discovered turns the whole thing completely
HILARIOUS.

I had occasion recently to retrieve information from a friend's Galaxy
A15 5G running Android 15...

...and it turns out that there are apps on the device that hide the
"|||"  <home> <back> buttons...

...and to bring them back?

You swipe up from the bottom!

So instead of being able to complete your operation in one step, you
have to use two!

Argue all you want about which method is superior, but having to use BOTH?
