It wasn't _that_ hard in 1996. Nevertheless, once installed, there was a
good chance that your hardware wasn't supported properly. In my case, it
was the video card and the audio. The former was limited to 800x600, and
the latter didn't play sounds at all.

My experience is that whether Windows or Linux, I need to maintain it
for others. If I use my mother as an example of a very basic user, she
encounters as many problems whether she uses one or the other. Heck, she
managed to screw up a Mac. The operating system that's given her the
least amount of problems though is Windows 11. Somehow, that thing
resists her destructive nature. Meanwhile, everything works great for me
dad regardless of whether it is MacOS, Windows or Linux. Nevertheless,
he had a preference for Linux Mint when I had that installed for him
because it stayed out of his way and only did what it was supposed to.

Imagine yourself sitting and working on your GNU/Linux
machine.

An email from the boss arrives containing an AutoCAD file
for immediate review or a Word document with uncommon formatting
(e.g. tables with fields and formulas) for immediate modification.
Neither file will open in GNU/Linux software. What do you do?

I would simply write the files to a USB thumb drive, with
VFAT formatting, and carry it over to my M$ Win machine.
When finished, I would reverse the process.

Yes, for others.

I still receive some email that contains multi-part messages with the
HTML part formatted in Quoted-Printible that is produced by the M$ Outhouse
email software.

My GNU/Linux email client can't read it. I have to save it to file
and then convert with recode:

recode us/QP..us <QP.txt >Ascii.txt

It is a burden but it further demonstrates that stupid M$ methodologies
permeate the world and the GNU/Linux user must be prepared for them.

I see only the reality of your SIMPLE MIND.

You are a simpleton and all of your opinions are invalid.

Any OS that requires that much RAM is a pile of junk.

M$ Win 11 is a pile of junk.

But I need it.

I have a Win11 laptop that I boot up once a month to apply updates. The
sticking point for me is the Garmin Express app that is used to update the
Garmin GPS in my car. The app is only available on Windows and Mac.

I've been pondering this koan for a little while now, and I haven't
had the "aha" moment yet. Maybe it can be found plumbing the depths
of "TINW"? Beats me.

BTW, I know you're excited about your latest MS Windows purchase,
but I can't see how that is on topic for colm.

Also, you didn't compare MS Windows to Linux, so it's off-topic
in cola, too.

I keep a working copy of Windows XP...

Slightly less orthogonal than the logic puzzle presented by

He said as he marched to the sea... We set up a molding plant in Madison

Spare us the nanny lectures.

What do you do if someone sends you an AutoCAD file? It won't
open in FreeCAD and so you are stuck unless you maintain an
M$ Win machine.

Although mostly unspoken and forbidden, a part of using GNU/Linux
is also being able to use M$ Win.

Think of a tourist traveling in some underdeveloped shithole
country. He must be prepared to deal with the natives on their
primitive level rather than expect them to rise up to his advanced
level.

If you're still talking "needing Windows 11" not ALL Linux users need it. I
definitely don't.

Me either.
Linux does everything that I need it to do. I haven't used
Windows in many years.
For others, YMMV so use what *you* like.

Correct, I like Win11, but I could do everything I'm doing with Linux,
not to the Nth degree in that a specific app wouldn't be available, but
another app would replace it, it's not a big whoop, if your machine
can't handle Windows 11 and the effectively same 10 then run Linux.

Hey, "Linux" news comes around slowly. This MAY
be a good sign - shows how STABLE it is under
the proverbial hood ('bonnet' for the Brits).

A few years back I was bitching about how FEW
posts there were in colm. The group was in
danger of just fading away, like so many others.
   It'd be a terrible waste.

SO ... I'm pretty happy to see a stream of threads
here even IF they're "off topic" sometimes. Keeps
everything ALIVE. And yea, we DO see valid Linux-
   related questions/reports/solutions OFTEN ENOUGH.

People are people are people. You may want to imagine
they're on some ultra-narrow mindset, but they all
are interested in LOTS of other shit too.

   Cope.

So, at times, COLM might look like a political or
philosophical group. This is the 'keep alive' noise.
BUT, every time somebody breeches a real Linux issue
I see LOTS of people jump in.

   This is good.
