But seriously, folks: this isn't about the same kernel as before -- it is a new kernel release, and the posts inform people that a) they are available, and b) that they build without error. You might also add -- in my case -- c) they work with the NVIDIA drivers, since I won't run these on my workstation with nouveau. (Note that these posts are to encourage people to try building the vanilla kernel...which isn't for casual users!) ObLinux: Should mention that with NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-570.133.07 and NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-575.51.02 Steam has been throwing an error: MESA: error: DRM_VIRTGPU_RESOURCE_CREATE_BLOB failed with Invalid argument MESA: error: Failed to create virtgpu AddressSpaceStream MESA: error: vulkan: Failed to get host connection Doesn't seem to affect gaming, but it's annoying. Might have something to do with my changes to my Linux .config, where I set some DRM modules to "y" (add to kernel) instead of "m" (build as module). Also some related errors in dmesg. Will have to investigate. -- -v System76 Thelio Mega v1.1 x86_64 NVIDIA RTX 3090 Ti OS: Linux 6.14.3 Release: Mint 22.1 Mem: 258G "Walls impede my progress"

I have yet to play Everspace, but I'm sure I'll dig it. Elite Dangerous is probably right up my alley too. As far as I know, both those games run natively in Linux. -- God be with you, CrudeSausage LibreOffice supporter John 14:6

However, CONFIGURING the kernel is the important and difficult issue. Why bother building a "vanilla" kernel when it is the same thing that the distros provide? But the distros cannot provide a kernel that is configured specifically for ones hardware, and building such a kernel should be the goal of all GNU/Linux users. Having said that, it is quite useless to build kernel sub-minor versions, i.e. 6.14.X unless there is a pressing need, which for the "casual" user there is not. -- Systemd: solving all the problems that you never knew you had.
