I thought these files were protected by the OS. It's embarrassing. The fact that the operating system keeps breaking itself is the reason why it becomes "slow" over time for a majority of its users. The problem is that the users have no idea how to fix this and there is no useful utility which does these kinds of repairs for them. They'll clean the cache and properly uninstall software, but they won't usually touch the system files. More than likely a sick hdisk. Check the smartdata logs and investigate because I'll wager no matter what OS you load up you will have issues. I once had similar issues and it turned out to be the motherboard hdisk controller spewing garbage out to the drive.
