Exactly. When I'm done installing Linux Mint, I have a complete, usable system -- with Windows (shudder) I'm just getting started. Last night, I suffered a yet another recurrence of a most frustrating phenomenon. But with Microsoft it's not a phenomenon but more like a feature. I tried to install a very "professional" piece of software (SAP Business One). On the "Hello" screen there was a button: "Continue." After clicking I get a window with a simple error statement. Then nothing. I can't proceed. I can't go backward. I have to terminate the process with Task Manager. No logs. No diagnostics. Nothing. I can only imagine what would be done in an actual "on the job" setting. There's be much wasted time and money. With Linux I can get oodles of information for every (rare) failure. Microsoft, and its software "partners," apparently do not want to burden their delicate user base with potentially cryptic messages. They'll offer a "help line" at $99.99 per minute instead.

Over the holidays and I managed to buy two Dell Vostro i5 laptops and upgrade them to 1TB and 480GB SSDs respectively and use them as servers with Ubuntu 14.04. The Vostros were damm cheap on ebay - about $200. The 480GB SSD vostro is running https web server, wiki, a php/mysql/css barcode stock management server software with photo gallery of all stock I wrote :), and also courier mail server with roundcube webmail to access all those emails from anywhere with https. The courier mail server has filter set up to route emails from all the important people and projects to their correct sub-directories, while pushing all the spammers to the spam box. The Courier Mail software is running on a laptop which means it can handle power outages for hours. That is one benefit of these powerful laptops. I subscribe to some mailing lists as well, which means easily 20,000 mails a year. Providers like gmail and paid email accounts easily run out of space within weeks but the 480 GB is not running out any time soon :) Handling such big directories is the second benefit of such a powerful laptop. I got the 1TB ssd for about $200 cheap on Christmas sale. The second Vostro with 1TB SSD with Ubuntu 14.02 is running vsftpd allowing 6 Foscam FI8918W and FI8910W cameras to upload a picture a second (about 70,000 images a day per camera) to the SSD. I wrote a python program to rotate the directories every hour, and then rotate every day and then delete directories after they aged 7 days (or whatever is as set in a configuration file). The python program loads at start up as a daemon using Ubuntu's upstart utility. I'm also using rsync to back up to the 1TB as it were my own private fast cloud service. 130 GB containing about 300,000 files backed up in about 8 hours first time around. The incremental back ups take about 1 minute with fast 1TB SSD. And all that in 2 weeks of Chrismas and New Year holidays. Wow. Linux is much more easier and now more powerful than ever. With Python, PHP/CSS and MySQL bagged in 2 weeks, it feels like something big happened. It doesn't feel necessary any more to write desktop applicatons if an online version of it is more desiable. PHP/CSS and MySQL takes care of all the user iterface, while Python (or C which I already know) can take of all the back end server related operations. Session managent, logging in forms and creating accounts in PHP/MySQL makes multiuser applications a doddle to make. That makes the applications much better than desktop bound applications (if the data rates between software and user is low).
