#357455 — For the Record: Ncurses is a Graphics Library II

Here is an example of the use of Ncurses to produce
useful and efficient terminal graphics. Why invoke
the bloat of a bit-mapped toolkit when ncurses will
do the same job:

The folks at Alsa know how to do it, but this may as
well be part of the control panel for a nuclear
power plant.

Ncurses is a highly underrated graphical tool. Consider
using it for your next project.

It looks like a character-based toolkit to me.

Then again, I've actually used it in development.

It is, it's for people who like to live in the 80's

I'm quite happy in the '80s and '90s but I also find it can be great for developing a quick interface/text representation of something in development where writing a UI would be too much overhead and is better left until there is a working back-end.

Those are totally artificial categories created by imbecilic journalists
and other "marketdroid" type idiots that have absolutely no validity
or meaning.

Of course, with GNU/Linux, it is perfectly possible to shut down
the X Window system and work entirely in a command shell. One can
literally switch between X and CLI at will anytime.

(Try that with Microshit Windows -- ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!)

It is very nice to have an ncurses GUI when tinkering around the
command shell as an organized interface can be much more informative
that a raw data dump. I often enter the CLI for new kernel installs
and when implementing boot script changes, but there are myriad other
reasons for desiring a command shell interface.

The ncurses GUI can be elegant and aesthetic as well. It brings the
user a little closer to the "bare metal" of the machine and that is
always a good feeling.

Those who would disagree are those unfortunate and pathetic idiots that
have been exposed only to Microshit Windows for their entire lives.
They are so conditioned to the Microshit GUI that, like the stupid
Pavlov's dog, their feeble minds could never envision or appreciate
anything different. What bereft losers!

Ncurses is just another of many GNU/Linux treasures that can bring much joy
to the truly competent and adept computer user.

Hail Linux!

Hail Stallman!

Hail GNU!

And FUCK all the goddamned Microshit/Apple zombie imbeciles!

Wrong -- rxvt-unicode can.

Also, Linux has Deja Vu Sans Mono, not sure why you would say it doesn't.

Much more than you and Scotty Doty, apparently.
Scott Doty's façade/lies have been exposed.

"DejaVu Sans Mono" has no Asian glyphs, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
[ 'ツ' is katakana, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is a kaomoji ]

It has no doubleWide glyphs;
instead, it has a narrow set of crude, HalfHeight glyphs.
Too crude, "MS Mincho" is _much_ better.

"OCR A" ( Optical Character Recognition ) is best for coding;
because 1 doesn't look like l, O doesn't look like 0, etc.
"Segoe UI Symbol" has Emojies. And so on.

"rxvt-unicode" doesn't mix and match fonts;
so you can't specify which glyphs, from which fonts, should be used.

I'm using Dejavu Sans Mono Book in a mate-terminal. I have no trouble
whatsoever displaying or inserting Asian glyphs into any file in vim.
I can either echo the character in or copy/paste it.

In Dejavu Sans Mono Book, 1 doesn't look like l, O doesnt' look
like 0, etc. Show me any emoji or heiroglyphic or cuneiform
or asian character that you think I am not able to display
on my terminal or use in a file. Every single one I've tested
from unicode.org has worked.

You've never used it. How would you know what it can do? The swastika
is not part of Dejavu sans mono either, but I can sure set it as my
terminal prompt.

Linux distros have *tons* of things that Windows 10 lacks,
not the least of which is a powerful command shell. Sure,
you can jump through hoops and install some of that stuff
on Windows, but why put yourself through that hassle?

lua is available for linux, but you won't need it to program the
mouse. There already exist utilities for binding xevents.

You say the shell is not the least of such things.

Can you show some of the other things? Would love to see how desktop Linux
serves you better than the competition!

Would love to see it. Here is how I configure mine on a competing system:

<https://youtu.be/sdSiYE7lbQI>

Works great for me. I have asked others if you can do this on Linux and they
seem to have no answer... just say programming mice is "idiotic" and leads
to forcing people to single-task in some way they cannot describe. Weird.

For me it allows me to use MORE programs the way I want... choice is good.

  Peter Köhlmann, <http://goo.gl/aBJMis>:
    -----
    | My question is if it is programmable by application: in other
    | words, can you have the next / prev buttons work to do tabs in
    | FireFox and messages in an email program and in the file
    | browser, etc.?
That is the most idotic way to program a mouse. But I guess the
typical single-taskers (windows and OSX users) who run only one
program can get away with such idiotic ideas. Linux users who tend
to have several applications on the desktop would not appreciate
if the programming of the different buttons constantly changes

The shell is the shell, and it is extremely powerful in its own right,
aside from all the powerful utilities that run in the shell. And this
of course doesn't even touch the magnificence that is X11, as you well
know.
