Now I just read a rumor that they might want to get out of the music download business and focus on streaming only. BIG MISTAKE. The thing about streaming is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to lock you in. I can have a subscription with you, and tomorrow stop that subscription and start one with someone else. And just like that, I can build a playlist with all the songs I want and pick up right where I left off for zero loss. Streaming turns music into a commodity, not an asset. Imagine if software was like that. What if all the software I had on my Mac was merely a service and switching platforms didn't prevent me from running that software. It would open the *choice* door for me. Switching to streaming will not help Apple in any way. And the more Software as a service takes off the more the platform no longer matters. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

I can track my stocks, watch a YouTube video here and there, use the phone of course, read and answer emails as needed. I'm basically pretty satisfied with it. I don't see any reason to buy another one or switch to another platform. If I had to describe the value of switching I wouldn't be able to. And at this point I feel like that means we've achieved saturation. I don't buy apps anymore. I have all that I want. Actually I am starting to delete the ones I no longer use to avoid clutter. I don't buy games anymore. I have a few and I just play those once in a while if I am stuck somewhere. Otherwise I don't go to the app store and look at what's new. I just don't care at this point. I bought Final Fantasy and still haven't even started to play it. I still play the same old game I have been playing for years, which is Field Runners. I check stocks, check the weather, use email, text and the phone. I've very much settled in. I have my audible books, podcasts, I'm done. It's pretty much been that way for me from the beginning with Android -- which is why my main Android phone was built 2011 (Motorola Admiral), even though I own and have tried newer ones (I like its small size and physical -- Blackberry-like -- keyboard). I have a few apps I like -- Evernote, Pinochle, Kindle, email, occasionally use navigation and browse the web -- and that's about it. If I thought I could get by without Evernote and email I would probably just go back to a flip phone. For most people, smartphones are just a commodity now -- no longer a status symbol or the newest "goo-gaa" gadget. I don't see this changing any time soon. It's the same with tablets. Look who sells the most tablets now ... Amazon, and they charge $50 for their biggest seller (when it's not on sale). I've owned a couple (maybe 3) tablets, I always end up giving them away -- I, personally, can't find a use for one. -- Zero tolerance for WinDrones and iCultists

I was hoping Win10 would be a masterpiece, but I didn't care for it enough to migrate. I've held off on an MS Office upgrade for more than 10 years, so I'm kind of excited about getting a newer version. Learning python then perl then Javascript/web stuff is keeping me motivated. I plan on writing a hobbyware chess engine in python. Right now I have dual-boot Win8.1 and Linux Mint 17.3 (it's just OK). I boot Linux ~once every 2 weeks for a little. Soon I'm going to use grub and install multiple distros: * Manjaro is probably my favorite * CentOS just to see what Red Hat is like these days * AryaLinux looks interesting * gNewSense to see how usable an 'all-free' distro is * a security-oriented distro like BlackArch * a scientific or math-oriented distro

You can keep the doze VM running all the time and gradually wean yourself off that crapware for good. :)

You must have missed that part about my recently retired 6 year old
machine being more powerful than just about anything Apple sells.
It's not the money.
Of course you don't want to hear that because it contradicts your tired
old narrative.

I don't even care about other vendors. Virtualization seems to be the new
shiny shiny. As usual, Apple isn't interested in persuing anything but the
rube crowd. They don't want to have anything to do with power users or more
serious computing.
They are content to antagonize the people that spend the big bucks.

...or you could go crazy and just trick it out in ways that are not
even an option with an Apple product. The problem with Macs is there isn't
one I would "buy just for the hardware". They even trashed their Pro line.

Back in the day, I really wanted to PAY for a copy of Solaris or OpenStep
but boths of those had really restrictive hardware compatability lists.
Paying is fine.
Being a sucker is not.
