Shows you how stupid *he* is. > Yet somehow you are seeing my responses and caring enough to comment on them ;-) So as I know you will read this, lets just refresh you faulty memory: Peter claimed that restore points existed in LINUX. He couldn't or wouldn't say how or where, he preferred to just call everyone an idiot instead of just simply stating the fact of the matter. Later he came back to say that this feature existed in ONE distro (OpenSuse) by virtue of the fact that it now used btrfs. Up until November 2014 OpenSuse used the same file system that pretty much every other distro uses which does not have snapshot features that btrfs. I've already said I wasn't aware of this new development in a distro I don't use but Peter says he uses on a daily basis, so why couldn't he just mention this feature in his favourite OS instead of being an arse? One has to conclude that either he enjoys being a loud mouth or he wasn't aware of the function himself until he Googled it. So far only ONE distro appears to have out of the box Restore Points which Windows has had for 15 years. No other distro has btrfs as default so to claim that Linux in the context where we are comparing it to Windows Desktop has Restore Points is patently wrong. Peter further compounded the situation by claiming that btrfs was standard on the big/major Linux server operating systems. So far he has yet to provide one example to back this claim. Lastly, there are issues with this system that cause it to eat up disk space, something I've never seen Windows Restore Points do. http://www.nrtm.org/index.php/2012/03/13/the-joys-of-btrfs-and-opensuse-or-no-space-left-on-device/comment-page-1/ Yup I know it's dated 2012, just read the comments. It's a problem that was there in 2012 and it's still catching people out in 2015.

They are not infallible though and I have had situations where I was unable to restore to a selected restore point. I simply chose a different one and it worked fine. I have no idea how this works under Opensuse but if it's like the rest of Opensuse I wouldn't trust it as far as I can toss the DVD. Just navigating through that travesty yast is painful enough. I wouldn't wish Opensuse on my worst enemy. Novell totally fucked it up and it's been going downhill ever since.

I like RedHat Linux, but it really doens't hold up like Solaris 11 does. But that is on the bigger systems of course where they have predictive failure analysis ongoing and lets you know of a possible upcoming problem.

Anyone who's used Novell software on Windows installations knows that just about anything they touch turns to Peter Köhlmann. I like your comment about eye candy though. It seems to me that most of the energy Linux developers have goes into covering the operating system with nifty icons and special effects with absolutely no thought going into providing the user with a decent, working operating system. There's no excuse for the "operating system" making many features available to the user in both the third-party software and the desktop environment settings themselves which don't actually function. For example, if there is a feature to invert the colours on the screen and it doesn't actually work, no software other than the Linux toiletware would actually put it in a menu. Meanwhile, Linux does this all the time and it is incredibly frustrating. No coverage of pretty icons or rotating cubes will distract people from the fact that it simply doesn't work. -- Slimer OpenMedia, GreenPeace Supporter & SPCA Paw Partner Encrypt.

After using IBMs, Primes, VAXes, Suns, Wangs, etc., in over the past 30 years, desktop linux is still wanting. It's the apps that make the os become usable. About the only thing that I've used on linux are the compilers... and even then, they break a few rules that Sun (Oracle) haven't broken. But even MS own C compiler has broken one of those rules. Earlier versions of MS C didn't do that. So then it comes down to making changes to your own code, and that isn't fun to do.

Even if your system will only get as far as the recovery console you can still choose a restore point. Here's the method with Snapper http://snapper.io/tutorial.html To be fair, there is a GUI for it though.
