If you want to share recipes from Web sites, just click "like" and let your friends pick them up from your FB page... ... no need to dick around with the "Finder" or printing out copies... ... that's so last century... just like the Mac...

My browser has the option of created a PDF from the print dialogue, or just saving the html document & assorted ancillary files that go with it. But no one does that with recipes, we just share links. Non-problem solved. -- -v

Right. Same with Windows (in Windows 10 it even includes Print to PDF, with older version you needed a third party driver). > But no one does that with recipes, we just share links. Non-problem > solved. But what about the actual use-case being discussed? Even with that Linux and Windows handle it fairly well: File > Print, select to save as PDF, then dig down to your Recipes folder (or Web Receipts or whatever). OS X has a more streamlined method: if this is something you do often, as I do, then you can do the same thing as you can on Linux and Windows, or you can save a folder as a common destination and just click. With emailing, I can also select to send the PDF to someone, including the URL if I want. -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

LINUX FILE SAVE DIALOGUES HAVE BOOKMARKS. Maybe you can actually try to be civil and talk about technology and not scream. OS X save dialogs ALSO have bookmarks (or favorites). With at least some Linux DEs, the dialogs for some programs have these favorites shown in the menu... but they do not have a set of specific places just for saving PDFs, nor do they have ones for sending to applications. Add to that, the print dialogs are not even consistent. Looking at Mint Mate 17.2, for example, the print dialogs of the default web browser and word processor are very different. Maybe if YOU actually worked to use your OS and learn about it and others you would not make such a fool of yourself as you attack others. :) >> OS X has a more streamlined method: > > NO, IT HAS A DIFFERENT METHOD that ISN'T EVEN SUPERIOR TO WHAT A LINUX > USER CAN DO, IF THEY SO CHOOSE. So SHOW it. I mean, really... stop flapping that jaw and whining about sour grapes and actually SHOW it. > ...and way too much bandwidth has been wasted on this bikeshedding. Whatever he posts is wasted on you. > >> Why can't any of the herd support their claims? > > Why don't you just go away and use your Mac, Droopy Balls? Here is what has been going one: 1) I show a feature... a standard feature I need to make no changes on my system to show off in the context of a fully working system. The only change I might make is to add a new feature in discussion (say the "Word Count" action I added) 2) Owl modifies his system to show a similar feature. Fine. Nobody expects his system to have all the features mine does. But he ALSO removes old options to make it so his menus do not grow. If he did not do this he would have dozens of options in his menus. This would be absurd. 3) This is not an issue with my system (well, not as much of one) because my system uses an OS which better recognizes context and provides more places to put your added scripts (say PDF Services in the dialog where you generally save PDFs, the print dialog, as opposed to having to click off the program and run the script from the desktop...) In other words: Owl can show a workflow for any small subset of features I show but his system is limited to doing only a few of these well at a time. On OS X I can do them ALL... and do them well. I show this here: <https://youtu.be/mb3Y7xjwnoo>. Even then I leave things out... but it gives a good idea of what is meant by CONTEXT and STREAMLINED. Maybe it is like trying to tell a blind person what a rainbow looks like - the Linux "advocates" just do not have the capacity to see. -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

When I was adding the word count feature I noted it. When I worked to replicate your file browser PDF converter I noted it. But overall the features I listed are still there. I have removed the Kid's Dictionary on my system because I do not use it - my kids do, but I added one for the urban dictionary. I also removed the one for man pages because I do not use it. So minor changes here and there, but nothing I have hidden and no major changes to my system just to show doing task X. My system is set to do ANY of the tasks I am likely to want to do without fiddling with the services. Doing so defeats the purpose. Nor for demo purposes it makes sense for you or I to add one to show it can be done. Of course. It is not like I expect you to have a link to a kid's dictionary or Urban dictionary sitting there just because I do. >>> 2) Owl modifies his system to show a similar feature. Fine. What determines what items show up in your contextual menu on Linux? Maybe I am mistaken about that. If I show the Services menu it shows how each item has different context (though, oddly enough, it clearly knows more context than it shows, for example the options for audio files are shown just in the "Files and Folders" area, but it clearly only applies to audio files. So not perfect. >>> 3) This is not an issue with my system (well, not as much of one) because my >>> system uses an OS which better recognizes context > > Yeah, it thinks "Save to Recipes Folder" is proper context for a spreadsheet > file. Again, you can work as hard as you want to miss the point but I show it here: <https://youtu.be/mb3Y7xjwnoo> >>> and provides more places to put your added scripts (say PDF Services in the >>> dialog where you generally save PDFs, the print dialog, as opposed to having >>> to click off the program and run the script from the desktop...) > > You really don't "get" the desktop metaphor, do you? Again, you can work to not understand, but not sure it offers any value. It is a part of the system AVAILABLE in the application... not by going to your desktop. That is the point. When you were able to replicate roughly what I showed you engaged in some good advocacy. Now you are beginning to realize the overall picture more and see how Linux is IN THIS AREA behind OS X and you are not handling it well. Sour grapes is what it comes down to. >>> In other words: Owl can show a workflow for any small subset of features I >>> show but his system is limited to doing only a few of these well at a time. >>> On OS X I can do them ALL... and do them well. Yeah, all my unquotable lies. Whatever. At this point you are going out of your way to miss the point. Or maybe you think you can show roughly what I show here: <https://youtu.be/mb3Y7xjwnoo>. Show where Linux has the same type of understanding of context and streamlining. Does not have to be done in the same way as OS X, of course. But this is a video you will never make. :) Comes down to you DO get the point you are pretending not to. -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

That is the point. The OS X Print Dialog is NOT "part of the application." It is not "inside" the application. Whenever you use it, you are going *outside* the application to perform a SYSTEM-WIDE function -- running a COMMON SYSTEM PRINT DIALOG. That is NO DIFFERENT from "going outside the application" to right-click on the desktop. If the Print Dialog belonged to the application, then fixed-context items, such as your "Save to Recipes Folder," would not appear across applications where they made no sense.

Yes, we can play semantic games all day... but you know what is meant. Now that you realize Linux is IN THIS AREA behind OS X you are playing games. OK. > That is NO DIFFERENT from "going outside the application" to right-click > on the desktop. Using a print dialog in a program is no different than going to the desktop. LOL! Do you even read what you post? > If the Print Dialog belonged to the application, then fixed-context items, > such as your "Save to Recipes Folder," would not appear across applications > where they made no sense. More game playing by you. The color selector is provided by the system, too, but is a part of many OS X apps. And the font selector. And the text tools. And a lot more. Hey, same with Linux for some of those... GNOME also provides a print dialog. And a Save dialog. For use with applications. OH NO! Run for the hills!
