I didn't see any compelling reason to upgrade to Windows 10.

All my stuff works. Socks works, Tor works, SSL is okay, QS
works. Windows 8.1 is a very reliable OS and superior to Linux
or Mac.

If that's your choice, that's fine. I won't try to talk you into
anything.

But as far as I'm concerned, what you're saying is like "My Ford works
fine, so I don't want a Mercedes."

Linux would be the Mercedes equivalent, right?

And Win-10-nic would be a YUGO

No. The analogy is flawed.

Linux would be equivalent to a Learjet.

Anyone can drive a Ford. Anyone can drive a Mercedes. But to operate
a Learjet requires extraordinary skills.

With a Learjet one can breakfast in New York, have lunch in Los Angeles,
and then enjoy an evening in Miami.

All the while the Microsoft clunker struggles to keep pace during
rush hour on the freeway.

You've been using Gentoo for years, yet you recently wasted half-a-day
just to get ONE (cr)app to compile correctly.

It doesn't take 'extraordinary skills' - it takes black magic and voodoo
to make Linux work.

A Linux-based Learjet can be towed that fast?

Can you imagine the worldwide cacophony if Linux were deployed as widely
as Windows is on the desktop?

Faceless, nameless FOSS "developers" already run away from fixing their
hobbyist slopware [1]. Now expand the bug reports by a factor of 60.

MS is doomed.

[1] I sent 2 emails to the developer of HardInfo. One to ask why he
used pre-1.0 numbering. He replied "It's just a number <grin>". The
2nd email was to report that his app showed I had 2 keyboards installed.
He refused to answer this email.

No. It worked back in 1997 alright. Without internet connection...

I remember connecting to the internet with ppp on slackware 3.0.

Trial and error with the options file IIRC.

In my tests Windows/NTFS copies large files (1GB to 4GB) MUCH faster
than Linux/ext4.

................................................................................
You'll never convince the world that Linux is the better OS. Been there,
done that and it's a plain bitch to work with. Great for the geeks that
have the time to invest in playing with it but it can be a real time waster
for those that want an OS to "Just work".

No...none of them do that perfectly but Win10 is perhaps the easiest, most
reliable OS to date that will load on meager and older hardware and get it
right the first time.

I have now done over 30 upgrades / fresh installs on various hardware (Asus,
Gigabyte, Dell and HP) that dates back to 2006 and I've only had to hunt for
one Asus hardware driver that Win10 couldn't find. That is frigging
amazing....

Last time I tried the so-called most user friendly version of Ubuntu on a
brand new build, it failed miserably and never could get a NIC driver or
video driver for it. Tried it on older hardware and it liked the old NVidia
video but screwed up the USB and DVD. Plus it constantly hung with error
messages that only a physics professor would understand. A mere mortal
doesn't stand a chance.

So if Linux is your choice - great, enjoy it but don't try to convince us
it's problem free - it isn't. It is also one of the most hacked server OSes
in the world too. Most of those big name hacks we've heard about this past
year were running Linux front-ends. Not exactly a secure system but yes, it
is less expensive up-front but over time, you pay.

Me? I would never try to do that. I know next to nothing about Linux,
and don't think it's better.

Depends on what you want and need to do. Linux as an OS is fine,
but help is poor compared to the help you can find and get for
Windows & OSX. And many of the apps available are just slimmed
down versions of more powerful applications that are not
available on Linux for various reasons. The prime reason most of
the professional applications aren't on Linux is that the Linux
community is pretty harsh on anyone wanting to make money off of
applications. And of course the 'roll your own' nature of Linux
 doesn't help.

That may be. As I said, "I know next to nothing about Linux"; my
statement "... and don't think it's better" is based on my ignorance
of it.

*rolls eyes*

So you admit you don't know anything about Linux, but still feel
qualified to comment on whether it's better or worse than anything else?

Stupid is as stupid does.

Have no idea what FUD means in this context so feel free to spell it out.
The online definitions I found don't seem to apply - good or bad.
