SubjectDesktop vs. Server -- are we, indeed, moribund?

Mr. Ahlstrom said the group was moribund. Not quite, but close.

I'm sitting here at my Linux desktop at my Linux job doing Linux things,
and I don't have anything to say about it except that it is happening.

"But you use Windows in your company!"

So? That's what our customer's use, so why wouldn't customer-facing
technicians and support personnel use the same environment?

Even so, operations folks -- systems and networking -- are as likely as
not to be using a Linux desktop. And for those who don't, it would be
surprising for them not to be running Linux in a virt, or even with the
Windows Subsystem for Linux.

As if that mattered: this isn't comp.os.linux.desktop, it is
comp.os.linux.advocacy. So why would we not tout its strengths, rather
than its weaknesses?

Linux is strong on servers. Very strong. One can do exciting things
with it. Trolls don't want to talk about that. So, let's talk about
that. ;)

So a few months ago, I finished a shell server for our customers where
each customer lives in their own chroot _and_ all their directory shares
are mounted using sshfs. That was an interesting project. Not sure how
I would even approach that with Windows, even if there was a solid
concept of a "shell user" on Windows. (I guess that would be more of a
"remote desktop user" type situation with Cytrix? Or powershell over
sshd? Beats me.)

It's pretty damn close ;)

Why not?

My take: I think there's a huge difference between the 'we'
you're talking about and the Linux 'advocates' in COLA. While
you're out there in 'programmer' land... people like Feeb are
scratching around with regex, crowing about how he's a
REAL 'programming' MAN. Meanwhile, there are newbs
like me who use 'servers' like node.js to do lightweight crap
with goofy databases (mongoDB) that people with more
experience than Feeb (DFS, for one) look down their noses
at. so COLA goes from posers like me, with crap like this...

<https://streamable.com/54zg9>

(FWIW... not much ;) there are only 3 output statements
creating variety: <https://imgur.com/a/mCtgg6P>)

... to DFS with his python/SQL stuff, to owl with whatever
sc/GUI magic he's messing with on any given day, to Feeb,
who swears he's better than all of us, to people who
mainly talk about politics, etc. IOW, who would you tout to
... or with for that matter?

> Linux is strong on servers. Very strong.

It is, but since Marek left no one talks much about it.

Lesson one of the Micro$oft propaganda guide is to attack advocates of
software Freedom as "hypocrites" if they use any closed-source
software. Of course, such illogical assholery immediately shows them
for what they are...

Wrong.
That would be lesson two.
Lesson one is to let the Linux zealots bubble to the top and spout their
religion. Kind of like you are doing right now. They do far more damage
to themselves and Linux's reputation than any Microsoft propagandist
could ever do.

shitv is lying, as usual.

Most everyone these days uses a mix of closed- and open source software.

What makes them hypocrites is making a living with Windows by day, but
sliming onto cola at night and lying about and insulting MS and Windows.

Most Linux "advocates" on cola, now and in the past, do this. It just
shows their commitment to Linux/FOSS begins and ends at their wallet.

What a pathetically lame and irrational idiot!

I make a living by mopping the floors after hours at various
establishments. The agency buys Chinese-made mops that are
highly inferior in quality to American-made brands. My co-workers
and I complain about this sad fact all the time. At home, where
we also mop our own floors, we use the American-made brands
because we don't cut corners where it counts: our personal living spaces.

According to the stupid stooge this makes us all "hypocrites"
(which is the stooge's favorite word probably because it's the
only concept he can more than minimally understand).

But we also know that the stooge is dumber than a developmentally
challenged schoolgirl, so we place no value whatsoever in his ignorant
babbles.

Microshit Winblows is monumental JUNK that is kept alive only
by total IDIOTS.

The case is closed.

Hail GNU and the FSF!

You complain but you do nothing about it, because what REALLY matters to
you is money, comfort and convenience.

In the face of a bigger paycheck or a longer drive to work, your
bullshit babbling about "Fuck Microshit and all of its degenerate
supporters." immediately flies out the Windows (tm).

Fact is, you would be supremely pissed if you were stuck using
GuhNoo/Linux crapware all day at work.

FAIL. Because your reality is the opposite of this stupid analogy:

At work you use good software like AutoCAD and MS Office, and you don't
complain because you know it's the best. And everyone would think
you're more stupid than usual.

At home you run FOSS junk like FreeCAD and LibreOffice, and you don't
complain because it costs you nothing.

Now, imagine of the company that makes the mops that you use was a
monopoly, controlling 90% of the market, and many mop buckets only
worked with those mops, making them pretty-much unavoidable.

Shitty, lying bastards like Dumfsck will call you a "hypocrite" if you
don't quit your job for "the cause".

Yawn.
Yet you and other Linux zealots have no problem spouting to whomever will
listen, how great Linux is.
The truth is Linux is free and if it was a decent replacement for desktop
Windows it would be more popular.
It's not and it isn't.
Yet Linux server thrives.
Android thrives.
Ask yourself why.
Then ask yourself why Linux desktop hasn't reached that same level.

A hypocrite is someone like you chrisv who uses Windows to post to this
group while at the same time takes every opportunity to tell others that
they are Windows idiots.

So why can't you post from Linux?
Answer that one, hypocrite.

And you snipped what I said.
I'll paraphrase for you:

The realities of the world are that Android is a massive success.
Linux as a server operating system is a massive success.
Linux as a desktop operating system is a massive failure.
Reasons include applications, pre-loaded Windows and the fact that
Linux and it's community is a huge turnoff to someone interested in Linux.

And in case you haven't notice, I use Linux, unlike the person you are
supporting, chrisv who posts from Windows.

I don't know you but you sound like another zealot which is just what
the Linux community does not need.
Zealots are bad. They are bad for Apple (ever see the idiots standing in
line to pay for overpriced gadgets?), they are bad for Microsoft as
well.
At least you seem to be using Linux which is a good thing.

Indeed.

If your Corp forces you to use Windows, what choice do you have?
Find a company that allows you to use Linux? How do you figure that out
before you apply?

Windows is basically locked in at most companies. A sad fact, but true.

However, one can still use Linux in a VM, or in the Linux subsystem of
Windows (will DFS ever call Microsoft "hypocrites" for supporting it? Of
course not! He's an asshole, bent as a boomerang!) Or even use something
like Git Bash, MSYS2, or a virtual machine.

Of course, your Corp may have complete say-so over that, and prevent you
from running anything not allowed by the corporate crapware.

Powerbroker, anyone?

I agree with you on this one. For years my company provided me with a
German manufacturer's car to use. I worked for that company so that's
how it was. I had to drive it. I hated it mostly because it was always
broken in one form or another.
I also had to use Windows because all of my clients used Windows.
But in my downtime, I use Linux.
Why?
Because I like it.
It makes me think and it's gotten very good in recent versions.

However, when a person who seems to have a deep rooted hate for Windows
users can't even manage to post from Linux then I call troll or at the
least troublemaker.

Linux may not have Autocad, but it certainly has some very capable news
programs.

LibreCAD for 2d stuff and OpenSCAD for 3d stuff works extremely well.
Also KiCAD for EDA work.

Since Linux has Catia, why would it need AutoCAD, which has fewer
features? :-)

Good question.
Why not ask the people who are pushing AutoCad.

And so it goes ... Linux ... uh ... no Microshit Office (thank goodness)
and ... uh ... ummm ... no ... uh ... Photoshop and ummm ... no ummmm ...
uh ... AutoCad.

But, more importantly, no malware. And, on Windows, malware is not a niche
product.
